Today I'm back with another of the seven deadly sins: greed. This sin was closely related to the previous one, but it's different. Their connection lies in the fact that both sins involve desiring what belongs to others, wanting more, wanting what they don't have. Envy is toxic and destroys you as a person. While greed will be the end of your pleasures, as the Bible says in Matthew 23, verse 24. This, eventually, ends up destroying you just the same.

I want to talk to you about what I understand by greed. It's not simply wanting money. It's a morbid fixation on accumulating, on holding onto, on increasing what one has, beyond any need or reason. It's confusing possession with purpose. The miser believes their worth as a person is measured by what they accumulate, not by who they are or what they do.
It's an emptiness they try to fill with objects, figures, and property titles, without realizing that this hole is bottomless.

I've come to a simple conclusion: life doesn't depend on many things. In fact, we depend on very little to live and live well. Food, shelter, health, a few genuine human relationships. Everything else is secondary.

The problem isn't having more than that; the problem is believing that these secondary things are essential. When you cross that line, the poison begins.

That doesn't mean we should reject wealth. We can live very well, with a better quality of life thanks to wealth, but in truth, it's not essential for happiness.

You can be rich and unhappy: very rich and very happy, that's everyone's dream.

But you can also be rich and not have the health to enjoy your fortune, and it ends up being spent on medicine and hospitals. I've seen people with a lot of money and abysmal spiritual poverty, and people with just enough and enviable peace.

Wealth is a tool, not a guarantee. When it becomes the ultimate goal, it betrays you.

And therein lies the key to that phrase: greed will be the end of your pleasures. Because you will stop enjoying what you have earned in order to try to have more and more.

The miser doesn't savor the wine, he only counts the bottles in the cellar. He doesn't enjoy the journey, he only collects stamps in his passport. He doesn't live in the house, he only values ​​its market price.

Pleasure lies in use, in experience, in sharing. Greed postpones everything for a "later" that never comes, because there is always "more" to acquire first.

Thus, life slips through your fingers, full of treasures and empty of lived moments.

There's something revealing that's very clear: the miser doesn't love the things he desires, but rather the possibility of using them.

And, when he has them, he doesn't use them. He's already got them. The miser loves the pleasure of possessing, of contemplating them, of knowing they are his and that there are many of them.

He is a collector of promises of happiness, not of happiness itself. Possession becomes a substitute for life. He becomes the guardian of his own museum, a museum that no one visits, not even he, truly.

Finally, we must see greed as a trigger. Greed can lead to other vices and sins. Coveting other people's possessions is the root of theft, fraud, and all the other crimes we commit to obtain what we desire.

Lying, betrayal, exploitation, and indifference to the suffering of others often have, at their origin, a spark of greed. It hardens you. It makes you see people as obstacles or as instruments for your accumulation.

That is why we must differentiate greed from ambition and desire. We can desire something, be ambitious in some aspects, but never greedy. That's where we cross the line.
Ambition wants to build, create, achieve. Greed only wants to hoard. Desire wants to experience. Greed only wants to possess.

The line is clear: when what you have stops serving you to live and you start living to have, you've fallen. And the worst part is that, in that fall, what you lose isn't just pleasure, but time, which is the only thing we truly had.

Hoy regreso con otro de los siete pecados capitales: la avaricia. Este pecado estaba muy relacionado con el anterior, solo que es diferente. Su relación radica en que ambos pecados desean lo de otros, desean más, desean lo que no tienen.
La envidia es tóxica y te destruye como persona. Mientras que la avaricia será el fin de tus placeres, lo dice la Biblia en Mateo 23, versículo 24. Eso, eventualmente, termina destruyéndote igualmente.

Quiero hablarles de lo que entiendo por avaricia. No es simplemente querer dinero. Es una fijación enfermiza por acumular, por retener, por aumentar lo que se tiene, más allá de cualquier necesidad o razón.
Es confundir la posesión con el propósito. El avaro cree que su valor como persona se mide por lo que acumula, no por lo que es o lo que hace.
Es un vacío que intenta llenar con objetos, cifras y títulos de propiedad, sin darse cuenta de que ese hoyo no tiene fondo.

He llegado a una conclusión simple: la vida no depende de muchas cosas. De hecho, dependemos de muy poco para vivir y vivir bien. Comida, refugio, salud, unas pocas relaciones humanas genuinas. Todo lo demás es accesorio.
El problema no está en tener más que eso, el problema está en creer que eso accesorio es esencial. Cuando cruzas esa línea, empieza el veneno.

Eso no quiere decir negarnos a las riquezas. Podemos vivir muy bien, con mejor calidad de vida con riquezas, pero en verdad, no son imprescindibles para ser felices.
Se puede ser rico y ser infeliz: muy rico y muy feliz, ese es el sueño de todos.
Pero también se puede ser rico y no tener la salud para disfrutar la fortuna, y esta se va en medicinas y hospitales. He visto gente con mucho y una miseria espiritual abismal, y gente con lo justo y una paz envidiable.

La riqueza es una herramienta, no una garantía. Cuando se convierte en el fin último, te traiciona.
Y ahí está la clave de esa frase: la avaricia será el fin de tus placeres. Porque dejarás de disfrutar lo ganado por tratar de tener más y más.
El avaro no saborea el vino, solo cuenta las botellas en la bodega. No disfruta del viaje, solo acumula sellos en el pasaporte. No vive en la casa, solo valora su cotización en el mercado.
El placer está en el uso, en la experiencia, en el compartir. La avaricia lo posterga todo para un "después" que nunca llega, porque siempre hay un "más" que conseguir antes.
Así, la vida se escurre entre los dedos, llena de tesoros y vacía de momentos vividos.

Hay algo revelador que está muy claro: el avaro no ama las cosas que desea, sino la posibilidad de hacer uso de ellas.
Y, cuando las tiene, no las usa. Ya la consiguió. El avaro ama el placer de tener, de contemplarlas, de saber que son suyas y son muchas.
Es un coleccionista de promesas de felicidad, no de felicidad en sí. La posesión se vuelve un sucedáneo de la vida. Se convierte en el guardián de su propio museo, un museo que nadie visita, ni siquiera él, de verdad.

Finalmente, hay que ver la avaricia como un detonante. La avaricia puede conducir a otros vicios y pecados. Codiciar los bienes ajenos es la raíz del robo y el fraude y todos los otros que cometamos para conseguir lo codiciado.
La mentira, la traición, la explotación, la indiferencia ante el sufrimiento ajeno, suelen tener, en su origen, una chispa de codicia. Te endurece. Te hace ver a las personas como obstáculos o como instrumentos para tu acumulación.

Por eso hay que diferenciar codicia de ambición y deseo. Podemos desear algo, ser ambiciosos en algunos aspectos, pero nunca codiciosos. Ya ahí pasamos el límite de lo correcto.
La ambición quiere construir, crear, lograr. La codicia solo quiere acaparar. El deseo quiere experimentar. La codicia solo quiere poseer.
La línea es clara: cuando lo que tienes deja de servir para vivir y empieza a vivir para tener, has caído. Y lo peor es que, en esa caída, lo que pierdes no es solo el placer, sino el tiempo, que es lo único que de verdad teníamos.
