None of us like to make mistakes. That's not only human, but obvious. Making a mistake? That word we all treat like a ghost to run from. I've made many, everywhere: in my work, in my relationships, in my personal decisions, etc.

But I've come to a conclusion over the years, as I've grown (not to say "matured"): making mistakes isn't the problem. I'm tired of telling this to my students, workshop participants, and stepchildren. The real problem, the mistake that truly condemns a person, is the refusal to face one's own error, acknowledge it, accept responsibility, and correct it.

Making mistakes is part of being human. It's the result of acting with incomplete information, with judgment clouded by the passion of the moment, or simply with the clumsiness of someone who is learning. Condemning the act of making a mistake is like condemning the act of breathing. It's absurd. What is unnatural, and indeed deeply harmful, is to become entrenched in error. To turn a stumble into a stance. That is no longer an accident; it is a choice. And it is a cowardly choice.

I've seen in myself and others how the defense mechanism works. When something goes wrong, the first impulse is to look for an external cause: bad luck, betrayal by someone else, adverse circumstances. Anything rather than point to our own responsibility. That impulse is understandable, but it's a trap. By refusing to examine my role in the failure, I relinquish the only real lever of change I have: my own behavior. I condemn myself to repeat the same mistake, over and over again, because I've refused to learn the lesson the error came to teach me.

To correct oneself requires humility. And humility isn't saying "I'm a disaster." That's usually another form of ego, a way of seeking pity. True humility is the ability to say, without drama:

"I was wrong. I analyzed why. And I'm going to act differently." It's unadorned. It's a silent and powerful act. Acknowledging a mistake doesn't make you small; it makes you master of your situation. The person who never admits a mistake is, deep down, declaring themselves perfect, and that is the most fragile and ridiculous fantasy there is.

This process of constant self-correction is not a spiritual luxury; it is a practical obligation. If a carpenter uses the wrong measurement and refuses to acknowledge it, the entire structure will collapse. The same is true for our lives.
Every unacknowledged mistake is a misplaced piece that, sooner or later, will cause everything to wobble. Personal improvement is not something you do when you "have time" or "feel inspired." It's the daily, underlying work. It's the most basic duty we have to ourselves.

That's why I've stopped fearing making mistakes. Instead, I fear stubbornness, the pride that prevents me from seeing them. Now, when something goes wrong, my first question is: "What part of this is my responsibility? What could I have done differently?"

It's not an exercise in guilt; it's an exercise in self-growth and humility. Because only by identifying my part in the failure can I regain control and avoid repeating it.

In this way, mistakes cease to be an enemy. They become the strictest and most useful teacher you'll ever have. But to learn from him, you first have to have the courage to sit in his class and be quiet to listen to what he has to teach us.

A ninguno de nosotros nos gusta equivocarnos. Eso no solo es humano, sino obvio. ¿Cometer un error?, Esa palabra que todos tratamos como un fantasma del que huir, he cometido muchos y en todos lados: En mi oficio, en mis relaciones, en mis decisiones personales, etc.
Pero he llegado a una conclusión a través de los años, a medida que he crecido (para no decir “madurado”): equivocarse no es el problema. Eso estoy cansado de decírselo a mis alumnos, talleristas e hijastros. El verdadero problema, el error que sí condena a un hombre, es la negativa a mirar de frente el propio fallo, reconocerlo, aceptar la responsabilidad y a rectificarlo.

Errar es parte del funcionamiento humano. Es el resultado de actuar con información incompleta, con juicio nublado por la pasión del momento, o simplemente con la torpeza del que está aprendiendo. Condenar el acto de equivocarse es como condenar el hecho de respirar. Es absurdo. Lo que no es natural, y sí es profundamente dañino, es instalarse en el error. Convertir un tropiezo en una postura. Eso ya no es un accidente; es una elección. Y es una elección cobarde.

He visto en mí y en otros cómo funciona el mecanismo de defensa. Cuando algo sale mal, el primer impulso es buscar una causa externa: la mala suerte, la traición de otro, las circunstancias adversas.
Cualquier cosa antes que señalar nuestra propia responsabilidad. Ese impulso es comprensible, pero es una trampa.
Al negarme a revisar mi papel en el fracaso, renuncio a la única palanca de cambio real que tengo: mi propia conducta. Me condeno a repetir el mismo patiero, una y otra vez, porque me he negado a aprender la lección que el error vino a enseñarme.

Rectificar requiere humildad. Y la humildad no es decir "soy un desastre". Eso suele ser otra forma de ego, de buscar lástima. La humildad verdadera es la capacidad de decir, sin drama:
"Me equivoqué. Analicé por qué. Y voy a actuar de manera diferente". No tiene adornos. Es un acto silencioso y poderoso. Reconocer una falta no te hace pequeño; te hace dueño de tu situación. El que nunca admite un error está, en el fondo, declarando que es perfecto, y esa es la fantasía más frágil y ridícula que existe.

Este proceso de corrección constante no es un lujo espiritual; es una obligación práctica. Si un carpintero usa mal una medida y se niega a reconocerlo, toda la estructura se vendrá abajo. Con nuestras vidas pasa lo mismo.
Cada error no reconocido es una pieza mal colocada que, tarde o temprano, hará que todo se tambalee. La mejora personal no es algo que haces cuando "tienes tiempo" o "te sientes inspirado". Es el trabajo de fondo, diario. Es el deber más básico que tenemos con nosotros mismos.

Por eso, he dejado de temerle a equivocarme. Le temo, en cambio, a la terquedad, a la soberbia que me impide verlo. Ahora, cuando algo falla, mi primera pregunta es: "¿Qué parte de esto es responsabilidad mía? ¿Qué pude haber hecho diferente?".
No es un ejercicio de culpa, es un ejercicio de auto crecimiento y también de humildad. Porque solo identificando mi parte en el fallo recupero el control para no repetirlo.
El error, así, deja de ser un enemigo. Se convierte en el maestro más estricto y útil que tendrás. Pero para aprender de él, primero tienes que tener el valor de sentarte en su clase y hacer silencio para escuchar lo que tiene que enseñarnos.
