I'm writing this from my desk, a wooden table that, I think, is older than I am. To my left is a stack of books, some with cracked spines. To my right, my cell phone, on silent. I'm not a blind nostalgic, nor do I pretend to be. I recognize the advantages of this time.

But I look around, I observe the people in cafes, the families in parks, and I see a pattern that worries me. I see screens. I see bowed heads. I see an intimacy shared with an algorithm, not with the person in the next seat.

I remember my childhood with physical clarity. It wasn't better, it was different. When boredom struck, which it did often, there wasn't an infinite universe of entertainment in our pockets.
Boredom was an empty space we had to fill ourselves. And we did. We went outside, organized a soccer game with goals marked by backpacks, stones, sticks stuck in the ground, invented rules on the fly, negotiated, got angry, and made up, all in the same day.
That process, that human interaction, was the game itself. At home, rainy afternoons were resolved with a box of board games. It wasn't just playing; it was the awkward conversation with a cousin, my father's strategy, the rules my sister read aloud. It was a shared ritual centered around a physical object.

And then there was reading. Reading was a refuge for me, yes, but also a conquered territory. Choosing a book from the shelf was a decision. Its weight, its smell, the rustle of the page as it turned.

At that time, there were no notifications to interrupt it. You immersed yourself, and the immersion was total because there was no alternative just a click away.

Now we read, yes, but in a fragmented way. An article, then a glance at social media, then a chapter, then a message. Attention has become elusive and fragile, for many.

Those of us who still read.

Unfortunately, almost all of that has been lost, and a generation is growing up with these deficiencies in their education.

Of course, I'm not suggesting we burn routers. That would be stupid. What I am saying is that we have delegated too much of our human experience to devices. We have confused digital connection with real contact. Eye contact, a handshake, a hug, shared laughter in the same room, the comfortable silence between two people who don't need to fill it with content. That can't be faked.

My proposal is simple, almost obvious: deliberately reclaim those habits. Set aside time, like scheduling an important meeting, for the analog world.

I suggest starting with one night a week without Wi-Fi, where the only screen allowed is the television if everyone is watching a movie together; buying a board game and forcing yourself to play it; returning to the physical library, wandering among the shelves, letting a title call to you; going for a walk not to burn calories, but simply to see the street, greet the neighbor, notice the changing seasons in the trees.

It's not about rejecting the new, but about rebalancing the scales. Technology should be a tool, not the foundation of our entire lives.

Recovering old customs isn't going backward; it's ensuring we don't lose something irreplaceable forever: the slow, tangible texture of a life lived with presence, not just through a digital intermediary.

Escribo esto desde mi escritorio, una mesa de madera que, creo, tiene más años que yo. A mi izquierda hay una pila de libros, algunos con el lomo cuarteado. A
mi derecha, el celular, silenciado. No soy un nostálgico ciego, ni pretendo serlo. Reconozco las ventajas de este tiempo.
Pero miro alrededor, observo a la gente en los cafés, a las familias en los parques, y veo un patrón que me preocupa. Veo pantallas. Veo cabezas agachadas. Veo una intimidad compartida con un algoritmo, no con la persona del asiento de al lado.

Recuerdo con una claridad física mi infancia. No era mejor, era diferente. Cuando el aburrimiento llegaba, que llegaba a menudo, no había un universo infinito de entretenimiento en el bolsillo.
El aburrimiento era un espacio vacío que teníamos que llenar nosotros. Y lo llenábamos. Salíamos a la calle, organizábamos un partido de fútbol con las porterías marcadas con mochilas, piedras, palos encajados en el suelo, inventábamos reglas sobre la marcha, negociábamos, nos enfadábamos y nos reconciliábamos en el mismo día.
Ese proceso, ese roce humano, era el juego en sí. En casa, las tardes de lluvia se resolvían con una caja de juegos de mesa. No era solo jugar; era la conversación torpe con un primo, la estrategia de mi padre, el reglamento que mi hermana leía en voz alta. Era un ritual compartido en torno a un objeto físico.

Y luego estaba la lectura. La lectura para mí era un refugio, sí, pero también un territorio conquistado. Elegir un libro de la estantería era una decisión. Su peso, su olor, el crujido de la hoja al pasar.
En aquel momento no había notificaciones que lo interrumpieran. Te sumergías, y la inmersión era total porque no existía una alternativa a un clic de distancia.
Ahora leemos, sí, pero de forma fracturada. Un artículo, luego un vistazo a las redes, luego un capítulo, luego un mensaje. La atención se ha vuelto esquiva y frágil, para muchos.

Por desgracia, ya casi todo eso se ha perdido y está creciendo una generación con esas carencias en su formación.

Por supuesto, no propongo quemar los routers. Sería estúpido. Lo que digo es que hemos delegado demasiado de nuestra experiencia humana en dispositivos. Hemos confundido conexión digital con contacto real. La mirada a los ojos, el apretón de manos, el abrazo, la risa compartida en una misma habitación, el silencio cómodo entre dos personas que no necesitan llenarlo con contenido. Eso no se simula.

Mi propuesta es simple, casi obvia: rescatar deliberadamente esos hábitos. Reservar horas, como quien agenda una reunión importante, para lo analógico.
Propongo comenzar por una noche a la semana sin wifi, donde la única pantalla permitida sea la del televisor si se ve una película todos juntos; comprar un juego de mesa y obligarse a jugarlo; olver a la biblioteca física, pasear entre estantes, dejar que un título te llame; salir a caminar sin el propósito de quemar calorías, solo para ver la calle, saludar al vecino, notar el cambio de estación en los árboles.

No se trata de rechazar lo nuevo, sino de reequilibrar la balanza. La tecnología debe ser una herramienta, no el sustrato de toda nuestra vida.
Recuperar las viejas costumbres no es retroceder; es asegurarnos de no perder para siempre algo irremplazable: la textura, lenta y tangible, de una vida vivida con presencia, no solo a través de un intermediario digital.
