Education in a Changing World: What Should We Really Be Learning
Big thanks and appreciation to the Hive community and the person who raised this topic. It reminds me that I went through to school and seriously about my own education journey all the subjects I studied, the ones I forgot, and the few that actually helped me grow and most of it are not useful.
We go from preschool to university studying subject after subject. But the truth is, not all these courses are useful for life after school.
Now, don’t get me wrong some subjects are very important. English, math, computer science, communication skills, and civic education all give us tools we use every day. They help us think, speak clearly, solve problems, and understand our society.
But what about those subjects we crammed just to pass exams and never used again? There are many like that. Some topics are outdated. Some should be combined or replaced with skills we really need today.
This is where I believe the government plays a powerful role.
Government influence on Education: Why It Matters
In many countries, the education system is controlled by the government the curriculum, the exams, the policies. But sadly, politics sometimes puts the wrong people in charge, and decisions are made without understanding the real needs of students.
For example, many young people leave university with a degree but no job skills. They end up searching for jobs for years or doing something totally different from what they studied. Why? Because the system didn’t prepare them for the world they’re entering.
Government leaders need to listen more to industries, technology experts, entrepreneurs, and even students. They should ask:
👉 What skills are in demand today?
👉 What tools do young people need to be independent?
👉 How can we use education to reduce unemployment
The Power of Technology in Education
In this modern age, technology is no longer optional. We are living in a digital world. Young people should learn:
Coding and web design
Digital marketing
Graphic design
E-commerce
Online content creation
Data skills and AI awareness
These are the skills creating real income today, even from home. If schools added these as part of core subjects, students could leave with a business, a brand, or a job ready skill. But nothing like these in schools.
Also, tech makes learning easier. With online courses, tutorials, and apps, students can go beyond the classroom. The government should invest in digital labs, internet access, and teacher training to make help this situation.
Final Thoughts
Let’s be honest the world has changed, and our education system needs to change with it. Government leaders, educators, and tech experts must work together to build a future where learning leads to freedom not just certificates.
Thanks again to everyone keeping this discussion alive. Let’s keep pushing for better, smarter, and more useful education.
