Desde que mi hijo tenía 4 años lo estuve llevando a diferentes disciplinas, sin imaginarme que le gustaría la gimnasia. El empezó solo en casa a intentar hacer volteretas y aperturas de piernas porque el manifestaba que deseaba ser Spider-man. Gracias a la recomendación de la esposa de un primo logré ponerme en contacto con una profesora de gimnasia artística, quien a su vez me presento al profesor que daba las clases para la categoría de masculino. Primero le realizaron una prueba y ese mismo día me dijeron que lo dejara porque tenía habilidad.

Since my son was 4 years old, I took him to different sports, without imagining that he would like gymnastics. He started doing somersaults and splits at home because he said he wanted to be Spider-Man. Thanks to a recommendation from my cousin's wife, I was able to get in touch with an artistic gymnastics teacher, who in turn introduced me to the teacher who gave classes for the boys' category. First, they gave him a test, and that same day they told me to let him continue because he had talent.

Transcurrió un año en el cual hay entrenamiento tres veces a la semana, en lapsos de dos horas, mucha preparación y disciplina para capacitarlos para las competencias. Honestamente no tenía conocimiento absoluto de como era la logística, con el apoyo de otras representantes y del profesor pude entender ciertas cosas que no sabía cómo se manejaban, por ejemplo el pago para competir, los uniformes, entre otras cosas. Al principio dude, pues eso generaría un gasto extra que sentía que no iba a poder cubrir, pero luego pensé que si buscaba alguna manera de generar algo más esa meta se podría alcanzar, al final lo importante era apoyar a mi hijo en lo que realmente le apasiona.

A year went by with training three times a week, in two-hour sessions, lots of preparation, and discipline to get them ready for competitions. Honestly, I had absolutely no idea how the logistics worked, but with the support of other representatives and the teacher, I was able to understand certain things that I didn't know how to handle, such as payment for competitions, uniforms, among other things. At first, I hesitated, as this would generate an extra expense that I felt I would not be able to cover, but then I thought that if I looked for a way to generate some extra income, that goal could be achieved. In the end, the important thing was to support my son in what he is truly passionate about.

Lejos de quejarme quiero compartir con ustedes mi experiencia, una vez que me dieron la fecha del viaje y para dónde sería me puse averiguar sobre los pasajes, el hospedaje y se conformo un grupo de representantes tanto del femenino como del masculino para irnos juntos como club ya que los niños solo eran tres (por lo regular hay más hembras), entonces entre todas empezamos a pensar como generar dinero para cancelar los uniformes, los trajes, la estadía y viáticos; así poco a poco entre todas fuimos logrando los objetivos. Una vez antes de partir me notifican que por parte del Estado le aportarían un autobús solo para trasladar a los atlétas y que las madres debían irse aparte, de una vez dije que "no" porque mi hijo apenas tiene 7 años y de paso tiene alergias alimentarias, luego de presentar su diagnóstico es que me permiten viajar con el y así por una parte "ahorrarnos" el pasaje.

Far from complaining, I want to share my experience with you. Once I was given the date of the trip and where it would be, I started looking into tickets and accommodation, and a group of representatives from both the women's and men's teams was formed so that we could go together as a club, since there were only three boys (there are usually more girls). So, we all started thinking about how to raise money to pay for uniforms, costumes, accommodation, and travel expenses. Little by little, we all achieved our goals. Once, before leaving, I was notified that the government would provide a bus only to transport the athletes and that the mothers had to go separately. I immediately said “no” because my son is only 7 years old and has food allergies. After presenting his diagnosis, they allowed me to travel with him, thus “saving” us the cost of the ticket.

Todo se fue dando fructíferamente, mi hijo y yo teníamos mucha ilusión de poder ir a la competencia. Cuando llego el día nos despertamos muy temprano para poder salir ya que el viaje por carretera eran 12 horas, las cuales se extendieron entre paradas por comida, poder ir al baño y ponerle gasolina al autobús, la cual corría por los respectivos padres que nos fuimos de cuidadores de los atlétas. Una vez que llegamos a nuestro destino estábamos agotados y fuimos directamente a descansar.

Everything went smoothly, and my son and I were very excited to go to the competition. When the day arrived, we woke up very early so we could leave, as the road trip was 12 hours long, which was extended by stops for food, bathroom breaks, and refueling the bus, which was taken care of by the respective parents who went along as caregivers for the athletes. Once we arrived at our destination, we were exhausted and went straight to rest.

Al día siguiente fuimos a conocer el gimnasio donde harían la competencia y también tuvieron entrenamiento para que así conocieran el espacio donde se iban a desenvolver. La verdad es que nos asombramos al ver lo lindo del lugar, el entusiasmo que teníamos no nos cabía en el pecho. Recuerdo como si fuera ayer el primer día que mi pequeño pisó el gimnasio con un uniforme que le venía grande y ahora lo observaba con tanta seguridad. El camino desde esa inocencia adorable de querer ser como su personaje de acción favorito hasta verlo hoy, plantado en el borde de la colchoneta de competencia, ha sido una lección pura de perseverancia.

The next day we went to see the gym where the competition would take place, and they also had training so they could get to know the space where they would be performing. We were amazed at how beautiful the place was, and our enthusiasm was overwhelming. I remember as if it were yesterday the first day my little boy stepped into the gym wearing a uniform that was too big for him, and now I watched him with such confidence. The journey from that adorable innocence of wanting to be like his favorite action hero to seeing him today, standing at the edge of the competition mat, has been a pure lesson in perseverance.

Llegó el gran día, confieso que llegamos al recinto con un nudo de nervios en el estómago. No eran los nervios de aspirar a un podio, sino los latidos acelerados de un corazón de madre, preguntándose si recordaría el esquema, si los nervios lo bloquearían o si una caída le rompería la ilusión. "¿Será que un año de entrenamiento es suficiente? ¿Estará realmente preparado para esto?" Las dudas eran un enjambre en mi mente. Pero todo eso se desvaneció en el instante en que lo vi marchar hacia el aparato con la espalda recta y una chispa de concentración en la mirada que no le había visto antes. En ese momento, no vi a mi hijo, vi a un pequeño atleta enfrentándose a su propio gigante.

The big day arrived, and I confess that we arrived at the venue with butterflies in our stomachs. It wasn't the nerves of aspiring to a podium finish, but the rapid heartbeat of a mother, wondering if he would remember the routine, if nerves would block him, or if a fall would shatter his dreams. “Is a year of training enough? Is he really ready for this?” Doubts swarmed my mind. But all that vanished the moment I saw him walk toward the apparatus with his back straight and a spark of concentration in his eyes that I had never seen before. At that moment, I didn't see my son, I saw a little athlete facing his own giant.

Realmente la competencia estaba reñida para su categoria, dentro de los participantes estaba en campeón nacional por 3 años consecutivos y mi hijo apenas un novato, pero lo que vi no fue una sucesión de movimientos perfectos, sino algo infinitamente más valioso: la materialización de un año de valentía. Pude ver la determinación en su cuerpecito al mantener un equilibrio un segundo más de lo esperado, la lucha contra un temblor casi imperceptible en la barra y la entereza para levantarse al instante de un aterrizaje no tan firme. Cada pirueta, para el juez era una nota en una planilla, pero para mí era un capítulo de su historia la superación del día que no quería entrenar pero fue igual, la alegría desbordada cuando al fin logró esa voltereta que tanto le costó.

The competition was really tough for his category. Among the participants was the national champion for three consecutive years, and my son was just a rookie, but what I saw was not a succession of perfect movements, but something infinitely more valuable: the realization of a year of courage. I could see the determination in his little body as he held his balance a second longer than expected, the struggle against an almost imperceptible tremor on the bar, and the fortitude to get up instantly after a less-than-perfect landing. Each pirouette was a mark on a scorecard for the judge, but for me it was a chapter in his story: overcoming the day he didn't want to train but did anyway, the overflowing joy when he finally managed that somersault that had cost him so much.

Cuando llego el momento de la premiación estuve conversando muchísimo con mi hijo, le dije que lo importante era que lo disfruto, que es un acto enorme de valentía presentarse ante tantas personas y que la mejor medalla era el orgullo que debería sentir por si mismo. Aun así muy competitivo me respondió "yo quiero medalla de oro". Lo espere en las gradas ansiosa, empezaron a llamar a los atlétas a los cuales le dieron medalla hasta el 5to lugar, mi hijo quedó de 4to en casi todas y en salto quedó de 2do, obteniendo así 5 de bronce y una de plata. Cada vez que escuchaba el nombre de mi hijo a mi se me desbordaba una emoción que no tengo como describir con palabras. El acepto el lugar que obtuvo y reconocío que para ser su primera vez estuvo excelente.

When it was time for the awards ceremony, I talked a lot with my son. I told him that the important thing was to enjoy it, that it takes enormous courage to perform in front of so many people, and that the best medal was the pride he should feel in himself. Even so, he replied competitively, “I want a gold medal.” I waited anxiously in the stands as they began to call the athletes who were awarded medals up to 5th place. My son came in 4th in almost all events and 2nd in the jump, thus obtaining 5 bronze medals and one silver. Every time I heard my son's name, I was overcome with an emotion that I cannot describe in words. He accepted his place and recognized that for his first time, he did excellently.

Esta primera competencia no trataba solo de gimnasia, sino de crecimiento. Fue la lección más clara de que la verdadera victoria no reside solo en el podio, sino en el coraje de subirse a él con apenas un año de experiencia. Hoy, mi hijo no se llevó solamente unas medallas colgadas al pecho, sino una dosis masiva de confianza, un recuerdo imborrable y la certeza de que, pase lo que pase, su esfuerzo es y será siempre nuestro mayor orgullo. La gimnasia es solo el escenario, pero la vida es la verdadera competencia, y ese día, sin duda alguna, ganó.

This first competition was not just about gymnastics, but about growth. It was the clearest lesson that true victory lies not only on the podium, but in the courage to climb onto it with just one year of experience. Today, my son didn't just walk away with medals around his neck, but with a huge dose of confidence, an unforgettable memory, and the certainty that, no matter what happens, his effort is and always will be our greatest pride. Gymnastics is just the stage, but life is the real competition, and on that day, without a doubt, he won.
