Today I want to show you a drawing I made trying a technique I saw in a YouTube video to learn how to draw. This is a drawing with a very marked contrast.

This is a somewhat short process since it's a pretty quick drawing, but I still wanted to share it with you, so here we go!

Hoy quiero mostrarles un dibujo que hice intentando una técnica que vi en un video de YouTube para aprender a dibujar. Este es un dibujo con un contraste muy marcado.

Este es un proceso algo corto, ya que es un dibujo bastante rápido, pero que aun así quise compartir con ustedes, así que ¡vamos allá!

I started by drawing a circle to guide where the elements of the face will go.

This drawing is a little different, because this time I'm going to draw taking into account the shadows, mainly. And this is an important step to improve in drawing, as I read, because it helps us to see things in a more 3D way. Since reality is not constituted by “lines,” but light and shadows.

In this case, I started by drawing the whole contour of the head: the hair, the ear, and the neck.

After the contour, I began by drawing the shadows. With the shadows of the face, I began to denote the eye, the nose, and the lips. It is influential to give the pencil strokes in the same direction for all of them, as well as to lay down the pencil a little bit to make interesting shadows. To give more volume, I gave more curved shadows, for example, on the lips.

Comencé por dibujar un círculo para guiar donde irán los elementos del rostro.

Este dibujo es un poco diferente, porque esta vez voy a dibujar tomando en cuenta las sombras, principalmente. Y es que este es un paso importante para mejorar en el dibujo, según leí, porque nos ayuda a ver las cosas de un modo más 3D. Ya que la realidad no está constituida por “líneas”, sino luz y sombras.

En este caso, comencé por dibujar todo el contorno de la cabeza: el cabello, la oreja y el cuello.

Después del contorno, comencé por dibujar las sombras. Con las sombras del rostro, comencé a denotar el ojo, la nariz y los labios. Es importante dar los trazos del lápiz hacia la misma dirección todos, así como también acosté un poco el lápiz para hacer sombras interesantes. Para dar más volumen, di sombras más curvadas, por ejemplo, en los labios.

I continued giving more shape and sense to the drawing. Drawing the beginning of the hair, the sideburns, and the inside of the ear. I also sketched the collar of the shirt.

I also accentuated a little more certain areas of shadow on the face, such as the lips, eyebrows, and eyes.

Continué dando más forma y sentido al dibujo. Dibujando el inicio del cabello, la patilla y la parte de adentro de la oreja. También bosquejé el cuello de la camisa.

Asimismo, acentué un poco más ciertas zonas de sombra en el rostro, como en los labios, cejas y ojos.

I started to cast shadows on the collar and on the shirt. What I liked the most about shading the clothes was the effect I was able to achieve by making slanted lines cross each other.

I gave a very light shadow on the cheekbone and began to give “color” to the hair, with strokes that follow the orientation and growth of the hair.

Comencé a dar sombras en el cuello y en la camisa. Lo que más me gustó de dar sombras en la ropa, fue el efecto que pude lograr haciendo líneas inclinadas cruzadas entre sí.

Di una sombra ligerísima en el pómulo, y comencé a dar “color” al cabello, con trazos que vayan siguiendo la orientación y crecimiento del cabello.

I continued to stroke the hair. In this case, varying the direction of the stroke adds dynamism.

Continué dando trazos en el cabello. En este caso, variar la dirección del trazo aporta dinamismo.

Finally, I blurred the whole drawing to make the graphite a little more uniform. I also gave very soft and subtle strokes on the face, adding minimal details.

And that's it. This drawing is a little different from what I usually do, because I recently discovered this new “way of drawing,” and here I decided to try it for the first time.

It's very interesting to draw practically without a sketch, taking more into account intuition, and drawing lines that outline a person. It is also very fascinating to focus only on learning how to develop shadows in a drawing, being this the first drawing where I make such marked shadows. Although they are still flat, since they lack many elements that compose the shadow.

Even so, I recommend you try to draw, letting yourself go more by what you see, instead of making an elaborate sketch. It's also okay to make mistakes. I used to depend a lot on sketches to draw; now I just let myself go.

Por último, difuminé todo el dibujo para que el grafito quede un poco más uniforme. También di trazos muy suaves y sutiles en el rostro, agregando detalles mínimos.

Y ya estaría. Este dibujo es un poco diferente a lo que suelo hacer, porque hace poco descubrí esta nueva “forma de dibujar” y aquí decidí intentarla por primera vez.

Es muy interesante dibujar prácticamente sin boceto, tomando más en cuenta la intuición, y trazando líneas que contorneen a una persona. También es muy interesante para centrarse únicamente en aprender a desarrollar sombras en un dibujo, siendo este el primer dibujo donde hago sombras tan marcadas, aunque siguen siendo planas, ya que carecen de muchos elementos que componen la sombra.

Aun así, les recomiendo que intenten dibujar, dejándose llevar más por lo que ven, en vez de hacer un boceto elaboradísimo. Equivocarse también está bien. Yo antes dependía mucho de los bocetos para dibujar, ahora solo me dejo llevar.
