The Referee Who Cannot Play - 5 minute free writing
Life goes on, and we live through it. At first, it feels like we are trying to understand life. Somewhere along the way, that turns into just getting through it.
There comes a point, usually when you are still young, when you realize how helpless things can be. You want to help. You want to change the cruelty around you, or at least soften it a little.
He starts with the people close to him. He cares. He believes that if he works hard enough, if he does enough, there will be less suffering around him.
Over time, he reaches a place where he can help others. A place that gives him money and some influence. He gives to people who need it and feels something honest in that. Giving feels clean. Simple.
“I do not need much,” he thinks. “I can give a little, and that is enough for me.”
People begin coming to him for advice. For help with all kinds of problems. He listens. He steps in when he can.
At first, it feels right. Then it starts to wear him down.
Helping others begins to upset the people he is close to.
He still wants to help, but now he wants to be fair too.
Every decision starts to feel heavier. In legal issues, in land disputes stuck in court, in calls made to move a case forward, he pauses.
Giving used to feel simple. Now he sees that no matter who he helps, something follows. Expectation. Dependence.
For some people, receiving help becomes normal, almost invisible. Like air.
He now understands that he was not trying to fix the world. He was only moving toward the truth of it.
He wanted to be a referee in the game of life. Fair. Neutral.
But he learns that a referee without real power cannot be fair.
P.S: The image is Ai generated.
Sorry for a long one, I know the story has to be short.
