I confess that every time the World Classic approaches, I feel that excitement only true baseball fans understand. It's the tournament of dreams, where rivalries become legend and the impossible happens in an unforgettable home run or in one of those catches that steal thousands of cheers. But this time, that excitement is mixed with a concern that, nowadays, should have no place in sports: Cuba's potential absence due to political hurdles.

Confieso que cada vez que se acerca el Clásico Mundial, siento esa emoción que solo los verdaderos fanáticos del béisbol entendemos. Es el torneo de los sueños, donde las rivalidades se vuelven leyenda y lo imposible sucede en un cuadrangular inolvidable o en una atrapada de esas que se roban miles de aplausos. Pero esta vez, esa emoción viene mezclada con una preocupación que al día de hoy no debería tener cabida en el deporte: la posible ausencia de Cuba por trabas políticas.

Today, unlike a few years ago, the OFAC argument is no longer so solid to justify exclusion. The obstacle has shifted towards the political will of MLB to send the invitation and, subsequently, that of the U.S. government to guarantee the visas. It sounds like a formality, but deep down, it seems like politics disguised as bureaucracy. As baseball lovers, we must raise our voices not to complain, but to propose something better.

Hoy, a diferencia de hace unos años, el argumento de la OFAC ya no es tan sólido para justificar la exclusión. El obstáculo se ha desplazado hacia la voluntad política de la MLB para enviar la invitación y, posteriormente, la del gobierno de EE. UU. para garantizar las visas. Suena a trámite, pero en el fondo parece política disfrazada de burocracia. Como amantes del béisbol, debemos alzar la voz no para quejarnos, sino para proponer algo mejor.

Politics and sports have had a stormy relationship throughout history. The boycotts of the 1980 Moscow and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, during the Cold War, fragmented the Olympic dream. Athletes who trained their whole lives to compete found themselves turned into pawns on a board, and not exactly a chessboard. We learned, or should have learned, that such confrontations rob the world of moments of unity and human achievement.

La política y el deporte han tenido una relación tormentosa a lo largo de la historia. Los boicots de los Juegos Olímpicos de Moscú 1980 y Los Ángeles 1984, durante la Guerra Fría, fragmentaron el sueño olímpico. Atletas que entrenaron toda su vida para competir se vieron convertidos en fichas de un tablero, y no precisamente de ajedrez. Aprendimos, o deberíamos haber aprendido, que esos enfrentamientos le roban al mundo momentos de unidad y superación humana.

Sports can be a powerful antidote to division, if we have the will to use it as such. The constructive approach is to appeal to the greatness of baseball and to common sense. Therefore, this is not just a demand for Cuba to play, but an invitation to all those involved – governments, leagues, federations – to be bigger than the circumstances. Bureaucracy and restrictions should not define who participates in the tournament that crowns the world's best. History will judge whether they allowed an administrative act to overshadow the purity of the game.

El deporte puede ser un poderoso antídoto contra la división, si tenemos la voluntad de usarlo como tal. Lo constructivo es apelar a la grandeza del béisbol y al sentido común. Por eso, este no es un reclamo solo para que Cuba juegue, sino una invitación a todos los involucrados –gobiernos, ligas, federaciones– a ser más grandes que las circunstancias. La burocracia y las restricciones no deberían definir quién participa en el torneo que corona al mejor del mundo. La historia juzgará si permitieron que un acto administrativo opacara la pureza del juego.

If baseball aspires to return to the Olympic stage and grow globally, it must protect its integrity above all else. Consistency in applying the principles of inclusion and fair play is fundamental to defending the essence of what makes this sport great: that the diamonds are a space for unity, not another battlefield.

Si el béisbol aspira a volver al escenario olímpico y crecer a nivel global, debe proteger su integridad por encima de todo. La consistencia en aplicar los principios de inclusión y fair play es fundamental, para defender la esencia de lo que hace grande a este deporte: que los diamantes sean un espacio de unión, no otro campo de batalla.

Let's dream of a tournament where the only things that matter are talent, strategy, and passion. Where the only "Fury" discussed is that of a batter connecting with the ball, not the fury of desk-bound speeches.

May the best team on the field win. Not politics.

Soñemos con un torneo donde lo único que importe sea el talento, la estrategia y la pasión. Donde la única "Furia" que se discuta sea la de un bateador al conectar la pelota, no la de los discursos de escritorio.

Que gane el que mejor lo haga en el terreno. No la política.
