Tenía 17 años cuando me fui de mi casa. Empaque mi vida en una maleta y deje atrás mi pueblo por la gran ciudad. La verdad es que no fue tan aventuresco como parece, me mude de casa de mis abuelos al departamento de mis tíos, pero sí era en otra ciudad y sí estaba abandonando mi hogar de la infancia.

Mi mamá y mi abuela lloraron ese día, mi abuelo estaba muy serio y podía notar que no quería que me fuera. Mi tío y mi primita, que en ese entonces tenía tres años, fueron a buscarme. Sabrina, es el nombre de la ya no tan pequeña prima. Ella estaba feliz de que me fuera a vivir con ellos. Durante todo el viaje estaba hablando (con su vocabulario de preescolar) de como íbamos a dormir en el mismo cuarto y como todos los días íbamos a jugar, escucharla hacía que cualquiera se derritiera de la ternura.

Llegamos y mi tía seguía dormida. Mi tío se despidió rápidamente de nosotras dos y salió a trabajar, la vida de médico era muy atareada pero siempre hacía un esfuerzo para estar presente en casa. Recuerdo que entré al cuarto tratando de no hacer mucho ruido, cuando me acerqué a la cuna, él ya se había despertado. Todavía no cumplía el año y su carita asemejaba a la de un muñeco de porcelana. Se llama Gael, es mi primo menor y mi ahijado. Cuando me vió, levanto los brazos para que lo cargar. Era imposible decirle que no.

Mi tía despertó cuando escucho Sabrina apareció en el cuarto dando brincos y Gael empezó a reír. Pasamos el día organizando mis cosas en el clóset, iba a compartir contigo cuarto con mi primita y, después de unos meses, se nos sumo Gael. Me sentía como Wendy Darling en la habitación de sus hermanos.
Empecé la universidad un mes después (no hablaré mucho de ella en este post porque se merece una serie completa), mis tíos me llevaban después de dejar a Sabrina en el preescolar y me recogían después de buscarla. Mis mañanas se iban entre arreglarme la para ir a clases y arreglarla a ella para las suyas mientras sus papás preparaban el desayuno para todos. A veces, cuando no tenía mucha prisa, era yo quien le daba el tetero a Gael cuando ellos estaban ocupados en la cocina.

Con el tiempo me convertí en una hija más y tomé el rol de hermana mayor/mamá postiza de los dos pequeños. Me encargué de atender a los invitados en cada cumpleaños y a limpiar después de que se fueran. Tenía listos los uniformes y los morrales para salir a las 8:00 am y los preparaba para sus actividades en las tardes. Sabrina tenía clases de inglés y Gael terapias motoras (no te lo había mencionado en este post pero él tiene síndrome de Down, lo cual ameritaba más consultas y actividades de lo regular, otro día te contaré acerca de eso). Mis tíos saludaban a mis amigas cuando me dejaban en la entrada de la facultad. En mi primer día, tía se bajó con Gael a asegurarse que había entrado en el salón correcto.

Los días volaron y cuando me dí cuenta ya llevaba tres años viviendo con ellos. Mis primitos estaban creciendo rápido mientras yo trataba de sacar mi carrera a flote. En las noches terminaban durmiendo en mi cama, ella en mi espalda y él a mis pies. Todo se sentía como el episodio de la semana en una comedia familiar. Hasta que un fatídico día me dijeron lo que yo ya venía sospechando desde hace varios meses: se iban a ir del país.

Bueno, siempre me lo ví venir. Cuando las cosas empezaron a ponerse feas nuestro hogar no fue la excepción y,contando con la nacionalidad colombiana de mi tío, tenía sentido que quisieran irse. Así que me tocó preparar maletas otra vez pero en este caso no eran las mías. Las llené de ropa pequeña y juguetes, aunque algunos se quedaron atrás. Se llevaron sus sábanas y sus mantitas junto con sus risas y abrazos.

Ya pasaron seis años desde eso. Los he visto crecer a través de una pantalla. Ella ya está entrando en la adolescencia y él disfruta su tiempo en primaria. Lo más importante para mí es que sean felices y lo son. Aunque deben confesar que sigo esperando que lleguen con sus uniformes amarillos y corran a abrazarme.

I was 17 years old when I left home. I packed my life in a suitcase and left my town behind for the big city. The truth is that it wasn't as adventurous as it seems, I moved from my grandparents' house to my uncles' apartment, but it was in another city and I was leaving my childhood home.

My mom and my grandmother cried that day, my grandfather was very serious and I could tell that he didn't want me to leave. My uncle and my little cousin, who was three years old at the time, came to get me. Sabrina is the name of my not-so-little cousin anymore. She was happy that I was going to live with them. During the whole trip she was talking (with her preschool vocabulary) about how we were going to sleep in the same room and how we were going to play every day, listening to her would make anyone melt with tenderness.

We arrived and my aunt was still asleep. My uncle quickly said goodbye to the two of us and left for work. The life of a doctor was very busy but he always made an effort to be present at home. I remember that I entered the room trying not to make too much noise, when I approached the crib, he had already woken up. He was not yet a year old and his face resembled that of a porcelain doll. His name is Gael, he is my younger cousin and my godson. When he saw me, he raised his arms so that I could pick him up. It was impossible to say no to him.

My aunt woke up when she heard Sabrina appear in the room jumping and Gael started to laugh. We spent the day organizing my things in the closet, I was going to share a room with my cousin and, after a few months, Gael joined us. I felt like Wendy Darling in her brothers' room. I started college a month later (I won't talk about it too much in this post because it deserves a whole series), my uncles would take me after dropping Sabrina off at preschool and pick me up after picking her up. My mornings were spent between getting me ready for class and getting her ready for hers while her parents prepared breakfast for everyone. Sometimes, when I wasn't in a hurry, I was the one who would give Gael his bottle when they were busy in the kitchen.

Over time, I became like another daughter and took on the role of older sister/foster mom to the two little ones. I was in charge of taking care of the guests at each birthday party and cleaning up after they left. I had their uniforms and backpacks ready to go out at 8:00 am and I prepared them for their activities in the afternoons. Sabrina had English classes and Gael had motor therapy (I hadn't mentioned it in this post but he has Down syndrome, which required more consultations and activities than usual, another day I'll tell you about that). My uncles greeted my friends when they dropped me off at the entrance of the faculty. On my first day, my aunt got out with Gael to make sure I had entered the right classroom.

The days flew by and before I knew it I had been living with them for three years. My little cousins were growing up fast while I was trying to get my career off the ground. At night they ended up sleeping in my bed, she on my back and he at my feet. Everything felt like the episode of the week in a family comedy. Until one fateful day they told me what I had suspected for several months: they were going to leave the country.

Well, I always saw it coming. When things started to get ugly our home was no exception and, given my uncle's Colombian nationality, it made sense that they wanted to leave. So I had to pack bags again, but this time they weren't mine. I filled them with small clothes and toys, although some of them stayed behind. They took their sheets and blankets along with their laughter and hugs.

Six years have passed since then. I've seen them grow through a screen. She's already entering her teens and he's enjoying his time in elementary school. The most important thing for me is that they're happy, and they are. Although i have to confess that I'm still waiting for them to arrive in their yellow uniforms and run to hug me.
