Se despertó con el corazón desbocado. Había llegado el día pero no la hora. Ahora tendría que esperar hasta que el reloj marcara el tiempo acordado.

Esa mañana se estuvo en el espejo más de lo necesario. Miró cada uno de sus rasgos. Las cejas, las patas de gallo, las arrugas en la frente, el color marrón de sus ojos, el lunar al lado de su ojo derecho... Todo lo que veía ya lo había desgastado el tiempo, ya no era joven. Sonrió, o más bien intentó una mueca de sonrisa.

Se arregló lo mejor que pudo y se dispuso salir a desayunar. Quería aprovechar lo que le quedaba. Vigilante de las horas, ya no tenía ninguna opción más que esperar. Así que fue hasta un café que quedaba a tres calles de su casa. Nunca había ido y sentía curiosidad por ese lugar. Eran alrededor de las diez de la mañana y no había nadie.

Una camarera lo saludó con un gesto y una sonrisa, le presentó el menú y se marchó. En el café no había nadie. Pidió su desayuno, y mientras comía pudo notar las miradas de los empleados. Se sentía juzgado, como si supieran que era un condenado.

Al salir del café se dispuso a caminar. Ya había dejado todas las cosas en orden. Su casa, su biblioteca, las cuentas; incluso dejó cartas a sus seres queridos que debían ser enviadas al día siguiente.

El corazon le latía a mil por hora. Cuatro de la tarde. Se sentía nervioso. Se sentó en un banco de una plaza. Contempló a los niños jugando y a los transeúntes. Uno que otro se le quedaba mirando, extrañado, otros se daban cuenta y se alejaban. Era como si supieran su destino final.

Ya a las seis decidió regresar a casa. Se cambió de ropa y cuando se miró al espejo pudo ver en su frente una marca, con la hora de su sentencia: 20:25.

Agachó la cabeza y cerró los ojos, resignado ya. Lo sabía desde hace tiempo, pero no quería hacerle frente a esa realidad. Se fue a su habitación, se acostó y tomó el libro que estaba leyendo, lo hojeó por última vez. Encendió la televisión y cambió de canales sin cesar, como buscando el consuelo que nunca había tenido. Estaba solo, y no podía hacer nada. Entonces cerró los ojos y decidió que lo mejor era dormirse, así no sentiría lo que le pasaría a las 20:25 horas de ese fatídico, su último día en la tierra.

He woke up with his heart pounding. The day had come, but not the time. Now he would have to wait until the clock struck the appointed time.

That morning he stood in the mirror longer than necessary. He looked at each of his features. The eyebrows, the crow's feet, the wrinkles on his forehead, the brown color of his eyes, the mole beside his right eye.... Everything he saw had already been worn away by time, he was no longer young. He smiled, or rather attempted a grimace of a smile.

He dressed up as best he could and set out for breakfast. He wanted to make the most of what he had left. Watchful of the hours, he no longer had any choice but to wait. So he went to a café that was three blocks from his house. He had never been there before and was curious about the place. It was around ten in the morning and no one was there.

A waitress greeted him with a wave and a smile, presented him with the menu and left. There was no one in the café. He ordered his breakfast, and as he ate he noticed the stares of the employees. He felt judged, as if they knew he was a convict.

As he left the café he set out to walk. He had already left all the things in order. His house, his library, the accounts; he even left letters to his loved ones that were to be mailed the next day.

His heart was beating a mile a minute. Four o'clock in the afternoon. He felt nervous. He sat down on a bench in a square. He watched the children playing and the passers-by. One or another would stare at him in wonder, others would notice and walk away. It was as if they knew their final destination.

At six o'clock he decided to return home. He changed his clothes and when he looked in the mirror he could see a mark on his forehead with the time of his sentence: 20:25.

He bowed his head and closed his eyes, resigned. He had known it for a long time, but he didn't want to face that reality. He went to his room, lay down and picked up the book he was reading, leafing through it one last time. He turned on the television and changed channels incessantly, as if looking for the comfort he had never had before. He was alone, and there was nothing he could do. Then he closed his eyes and decided that the best thing to do was to go to sleep, so he would not feel what would happen to him at 8:25 p.m. on that fateful, his last day on earth.
