La escena es simple: En una reunión casual estás compartiendo una idea. No estás dudando, no estás preguntando, solo estás hablando. De pronto, alguien, normalmente un hombre, te interrumpe con un “déjame explicarte” o con un "en realidad es que funciona así...", y comienza a desarrollar el tema desde cero, como si tú no lo comprendieras.

No levantas la voz. No corriges. Sigues escuchando. Pero algo ahí se sintió… innecesario.

No es que necesitaras que te explicaran un tema que ya conoces. Es que, a veces, se cree que lo dicho por una mujer necesita otra voz, masculina, para ser tomado en serio.

Y eso, mi amiga, ya es una fenómeno reconocido socialmente como mansplaining.

The scene is simple: You are sharing an idea in a casual meeting. You are not hesitating, you are not asking questions, you are just talking. Suddenly, someone, usually a man, interrupts you with “let me explain” or “actually, it works like this...”, and begins to explain the topic from scratch, as if you did not understand it.

You don't raise your voice. You don't correct them. You keep listening. But something about it felt... unnecessary.

It's not that you needed someone to explain something you already know. It's just that sometimes people think that what a woman says needs another voice, a male voice, to be taken seriously.

And that, my friend, is a phenomenon that is socially recognized as mansplaining.

Si me pongo a reflexionar, es una situación que me ha ocurrido en varias ocasiones, con distintos hombres. Podría decir que comenzó incluso con mi padre, un hombre al que amo y respeto profundamente, y con quien he aprendido a manejar este tipo de dinámicas desde el vínculo y la confianza.

La incomodidad se vuelve diferente cuando ocurre con hombres con los que no existe una relación cercana, ni un espacio previamente otorgado para intervenir o asumir autoridad sobre ciertos temas. Ahí, la sensación cambia. No es familiar, no es cuidado; es invasivo.

Durante mucho tiempo fue algo que simplemente me molestaba, pero no sabía explicar exactamente por qué. Sabía que había algo en esas conversaciones que me incomodaba, algo que no encajaba, pero no lograba identificar cuál era el factor principal.

Hasta que, casi sin buscarlo, me apareció una publicación en redes sociales donde se hablaba del mansplaining.

Mansplaining? What on earth is that?

When I think about it, this is a situation that has happened to me on several occasions, with different men. I could say that it even started with my father, a man I love and respect deeply, and with whom I have learned to handle this type of dynamic through bonding and trust.

The discomfort becomes different when it occurs with men with whom there is no close relationship, nor a previously established space to intervene or assume authority on certain issues. There, the feeling changes. It is unfamiliar, it is not caring; it is invasive.

For a long time, it was something that simply bothered me, but I couldn't explain exactly why. I knew there was something about those conversations that made me uncomfortable, something that didn't fit, but I couldn't identify what the main factor was.

Until, almost without looking for it, I came across a post on social media that talked about mansplaining.

El término proviene del inglés y se compone de man (hombre) y explain (explicar), lo que podría traducirse como “explicación masculina”. Fue popularizado a partir del libro recopilatorio de ensayos del 2014, Men Explain Things to Me (Los hombres me explican cosas), de la escritora Rebecca Solnit. Aunque ella no utilizó el término de forma explícita, su texto describía una experiencia tan común que se hizo muy popular en su momento, tanto que la sociedad terminó encontrándole un nombre.

Porque cuando algo se nombra, se vuelve visible. Y es increíble que su libro fue publicado hace más de una década, pero acabo de terminar de leer los capítulos acerca de este tema, y me sentí completamente identificada.

Cabe destacar, que la Real Academia Española define el mansplaining como: “Explicación dada por un varón a una mujer en tono condescendiente, presuponiendo de forma injustificada desconocimiento de la cuestión por parte de esta”

The term comes from English and is composed of man and explain, which could be translated as “male explanation.” It was popularized by the 2014 compilation of essays, Men Explain Things to Me, by writer Rebecca Solnit. Although she did not use the term explicitly, her text described such a common experience that it became very popular at the time, so much so that society ended up finding a name for it.

Because when something is named, it becomes visible. And it's incredible that her book was published more than a decade ago, but I just finished reading the chapters on this topic, and I completely identified with them.

It should be noted that the Royal Spanish Academy defines mansplaining as: “An explanation given by a man to a woman in a condescending tone, unjustifiably assuming that she is ignorant of the subject.”

Es hermoso que alguien te explique algo que no sabes, sea hombre o mujer. Aprender de otros es valioso. Pero aquí quiero enfocarme en un tipo específico de situación: las explicaciones que algunos hombres dan a mujeres no desde el deseo genuino de compartir conocimiento, sino desde la creencia de que esa mujer sabe menos, entiende menos o necesita ser guiada. No es enseñar. Es asumir superioridad.

Y no, no vamos a generalizar. Detesto las generalizaciones. No todos los hombres son así, en absoluto. Invalidar a toda una población por las actitudes de algunos me parece injusto, sobre todo cuando nosotras, como mujeres, también cometemos errores en nuestras interacciones. Así que esta no es una publicación para atacar, sino para informar.

Por supuesto, esto no excluye que las mujeres también puedan actuar de esta manera. Incluso la propia Rebecca Solnit menciona que personas de todos los géneros pueden adoptar estas actitudes, pero que existe una mayor incidencia en comportamientos masculinos.

It's wonderful when someone explains something you don't know, whether they're a man or a woman. Learning from others is valuable. But here I want to focus on a specific type of situation: explanations that some men give to women not out of a genuine desire to share knowledge, but out of a belief that women know less, understand less, or need to be guided. It's not teaching. It's assuming superiority.

And no, we're not going to generalize. I hate generalizations. Not all men are like that, not at all. It seems unfair to me to invalidate an entire population because of the attitudes of a few, especially when we, as women, also make mistakes in our interactions. So this is not a post intended to attack, but to inform.

Of course, this does not exclude the possibility that women can also act this way. Even Rebecca Solnit herself mentions that people of all genders can adopt these attitudes, but that there is a higher incidence of such behavior among men.

Podría dar muchos ejemplos, pero comenzaré con la situación que realmente me abrió los ojos.

El año pasado finalicé mi última investigación universitaria, un requisito para graduarme. Soy psicóloga. Durante ese proceso estuve un año trabajando en un tema sencillo, pero significativo para mí, junto a una compañera de investigación y bajo la guía de dos tutores especializados en el área. Al presentar el trabajo ante el jurado, recibimos felicitaciones y comentarios positivos; se mostraron satisfechos y orgullosos del resultado.

Durante ese tiempo, mientras conversaba de manera casual sobre esta investigación con un colega —un hombre, mayor que yo— la conversación tomó un giro inesperado. Si bien tenía más experiencia práctica, esta no estaba relacionada con el ámbito específico de mi investigación. Aun así, me interrumpió para explicarme “en qué estaba equivocada” y “cómo debía haber hecho las cosas”.

No entendía por qué quería explicarme un tema que había investigado durante meses, con acompañamiento académico y validación profesional. Y no se trataba únicamente de que explicara. Era el tono condescendiente. Ese tono que no dialoga, que no pregunta, que no escucha. El tono del “tú no sabes, yo sí; déjame hablar”.

Puede que fuera menor en edad. Puede que estuviera recién graduada. Pero tenía el conocimiento, la preparación y la capacidad necesaria para llevar a cabo mi investigación. Era un tema sencillo, sí, pero lo conocía. Y, además, me apasionaba.

I could give many examples, but I'll start with the situation that really opened my eyes.

Last year, I completed my final university research project, a requirement for graduation. I'm a psychologist. During that process, I spent a year working on a simple but meaningful topic for me, alongside a research partner and under the guidance of two tutors who specialized in the area. When we presented our work to the jury, we received congratulations and positive comments; they were satisfied and proud of the result.

During that time, while casually discussing this research with a colleague—a man older than me—the conversation took an unexpected turn. Although he had more practical experience, it was not related to the specific field of my research. Even so, he interrupted me to explain “where I was wrong” and “how I should have done things.”

I didn't understand why she wanted to explain a topic to me that I had researched for months, with academic support and professional validation. And it wasn't just about her explaining it. It was the condescending tone. That tone that doesn't engage in dialogue, that doesn't ask questions, that doesn't listen. The tone of “you don't know, I do; let me talk.”

I may have been younger. I may have been a recent graduate. But I had the knowledge, the preparation, and the ability necessary to carry out my research. It was a simple topic, yes, but I knew it. And, besides, I was passionate about it.

En ese momento tuve una especie de epifanía. Recordé muchas otras situaciones en las que me había sentido igual, con distintos hombres y en contextos diferentes. Cuando intentaron explicarme mis libros favoritos. La música que escucho. La manera en que debía expresarme emocionalmente. Cómo interpretar la política mundial. El feminismo. Los roles de la mujer en la sociedad —porque, claro, yo como mujer y psicóloga aparentemente no comprendía nada de eso— o incluso cómo debía prepararme mis propias comidas (sí, sé cocinar, y muy bien).

Hoy, muchas de esas situaciones me generan risa. Las recuerdo y pienso: “no, no puede ser”. Pero en su momento no fue así. No supe cómo reaccionar. No supe defenderme ni poner límites. Les cedí, sin darme cuenta, el poder de explicarme cómo debía ser yo y cómo debía vivir. Y no. Nadie más que yo sabe eso.

Acepto un buen consejo, y los valoro profundamente. Busco ayuda cuando no sé hacer algo o cuando quiero aprender algo nuevo. Me encanta escuchar a personas hablar de lo que les apasiona. Me encanta aprender. Lo que no acepto son opiniones no solicitadas sobre quién soy o sobre temas que ya conozco, con la intención de hacerme sentir inferior.

At that moment, I had a kind of epiphany. I remembered many other situations in which I had felt the same way, with different men and in different contexts. When they tried to explain my favorite books to me. The music I listen to. The way I should express myself emotionally. How to interpret world politics. Feminism. The roles of women in society—because, of course, as a woman and a psychologist, I apparently didn't understand any of that—or even how I should prepare my own meals (yes, I can cook, and very well).

Today, many of those situations make me laugh. I remember them and think, “No, it can't be.” But at the time, it wasn't like that. I didn't know how to react. I didn't know how to defend myself or set boundaries. Without realizing it, I gave them the power to tell me how I should be and how I should live. And no. No one but me knows that.

I welcome good advice and value it deeply. I seek help when I don't know how to do something or when I want to learn something new. I love listening to people talk about what they are passionate about. I love learning. What I don't accept are unsolicited opinions about who I am or about topics I already know about, with the intention of making me feel inferior.

¿Podemos detectar el Mansplaining?

El mansplaining no siempre es evidente. A veces es sutil, casi invisible. Algunas señales pueden ser: te interrumpen para explicarte algo que ya estabas diciendo; no te preguntan si necesitas ayuda o aclaración, o hablan más de lo que escuchan. Además, asumen que sabes menos, incluso cuando tienes formación o experiencia; mantienen un tono que no es de diálogo, sino de corrección. Y, especialmente, minimizan tu opinión mientras refuerzan la suya como “la correcta”

No es el contenido de la explicación. Es la actitud desde la que se explica.

Y estas situaciones, aunque parezcan pequeñas, dejan huella. Empiezas a dudar de lo que sabes, te vuelves más silenciosa en conversaciones, sientes ansiedad antes de opinar, te preguntas si exageras, y tienes ese sensación de incomodidad, pero no sabes cómo explicarla. No porque seas débil, sino porque te están desplazando del lugar de validez. Y eso cansa. Mucho.

Tal como menciona Solnit en su ensayo: "Decirle a alguien, categóricamente, que él sabe de lo que está hablando y ella no, aunque sea durante una pequeña parte de la conversación, perpetúa la fealdad de este mundo y retiene su luz”

Can we detect mansplaining?

Mansplaining is not always obvious. Sometimes it is subtle, almost invisible. Some signs may include: interrupting you to explain something you were already saying; not asking if you need help or clarification; or talking more than they listen. In addition, they assume you know less, even when you have training or experience; they maintain a tone that is not one of dialogue, but of correction. And, especially, they minimize your opinion while reinforcing theirs as “the correct one.”

It's not the content of the explanation. It's the attitude with which it is explained.

And these situations, even if they seem minor, leave their mark. You start to doubt what you know, you become quieter in conversations, you feel anxious before expressing your opinion, you wonder if you're overreacting, and you have that feeling of discomfort, but you don't know how to explain it. Not because you're weak, but because you're being pushed out of your place of validity. And that's exhausting. Very exhausting.

As Solnit mentions in her essay: “Telling someone, categorically, that he knows what he is talking about and she does not, even if only for a small part of the conversation, perpetuates the ugliness of this world and holds back its light.”

¿Qué podemos hacer?

No hay una sola forma correcta, y no siempre tenemos que responder. Pero quizás estas ideas pueden ayudar: Nombrar lo que pasa, aunque sea internamente: “esto no es ayuda, es condescendencia”. Hacer preguntas en lugar de defenderte: “¿Por qué asumes que no lo sé?”, “¿Me estás explicando algo nuevo o retomando lo que ya dije?”. Poner límites simples: “Gracias, ya conozco el tema.”, “no necesito una explicación ahora". Recordarte quién eres: tu conocimiento no desaparece porque alguien lo ignore.

Y, a veces, simplemente retirarte emocionalmente de la conversación también es un límite.

Reconocer el patrón no es para vivir a la defensiva. Es para volver a ocupar tu lugar.

Lo más desconcertante no es que expliquen, es que no aportan nada nuevo. No suman información, no amplían la idea, no corrigen un error. Simplemente toman lo que tú acabas de decir, lo repiten con otras palabras… y de pronto ahí sí es válido. Eso pasa tanto que muchas ni lo registran como algo “grave”. Pero es una invasión a tu espacio personal.

What can we do?

There is no single correct way, and we don't always have to respond. But perhaps these ideas can help: Name what is happening, even if only internally: “This isn't help, it's condescension". Ask questions instead of defending yourself: “Why do you assume I don't know that?”, “Are you explaining something new to me or repeating what I already said?”. Set simple boundaries: “Thanks, I already know about that”, “I don't need an explanation right now". Remind yourself who you are: your knowledge doesn't disappear just because someone ignores it.

And sometimes, simply withdrawing emotionally from the conversation is also a boundary.

Recognizing the pattern is not about living defensively. It's about reclaiming your place.

The most disconcerting thing is not that they explain themselves, but that they don't contribute anything new. They don't add information, they don't expand on the idea, they don't correct a mistake. They simply take what you just said, repeat it in other words... and suddenly it's valid. This happens so often that many people don't even register it as something “serious.” But it is an invasion of your personal space.

Y hay algo del libro que me llamó especialmente la atención y que merece ser mencionado: no escribo esto desde un sentimiento de inferioridad. No lo escribo para victimizarme ni porque esté dolida.

Lo escribo porque conozco la situación. Porque sé lo impotente que puede hacer sentir. Porque compartir la experiencia también es una forma de acompañarnos y de permitir que alguien más se sienta identificada y apoyada.

Y lo escribo, además, porque es profundamente satisfactorio ser una mujer que puede elegir, que tiene el derecho de hablar de aquello que conoce y le apasiona, sin miedo a ser silenciada o juzgada por sus palabras.

Ahora te pregunto a ti:

And there is something about the book that particularly caught my attention and deserves to be mentioned: I am not writing this from a place of inferiority. I am not writing it to play the victim or because I am hurt.

I am writing it because I know the situation. Because I know how powerless it can make you feel. Because sharing the experience is also a way of supporting each other and allowing someone else to feel identified and supported.

And I write this, moreover, because it is deeply satisfying to be a woman who can choose, who has the right to speak about what she knows and is passionate about, without fear of being silenced or judged for her words.
