I'm tired of so much indifference.
For a long time, thinking about indifference filled me with a mixture of anger and bewilderment. I couldn't understand how someone could stand idly by in the face of injustice, or look the other way when something important was breaking down around them. I saw it as a form of cowardice, or worse, silent complicity. Until one day, I understood that indifference isn't an action, but quite the opposite: it's an absence. It's the act of refusing to feel, to get involved, to lift a finger for what happens outside one's own sphere of influence.

And that's precisely what makes it so dangerous. In my view (perhaps someone else thinks differently, it's possible), indifference is a complete void. It's absolute nothingness.

When a person is indifferent to the problems of their community, to the needs of those around them, or to the causes that matter to society, they are saying, without needing to say a word, that their bubble is the only thing that's real and the only thing that matters (as if it were possible to live in a bubble).

In their naiveté and selfishness, they are sending the message that the other, the outsider, doesn't exist or doesn't deserve their attention. Over time, I've come to think that this attitude doesn't speak so much to what's happening outside, as to what's happening inside the indifferent person. It speaks of exhaustion, perhaps, or a deep fear of getting involved and getting hurt.

I have no idea. Maybe, in the worst-case scenario, that indifference speaks of a selfishness so solid that it leaves no room for anything else in his life.

But I've also learned, through many personal experiences over the years and events with my children and colleagues, that nothing in life is black and white. And I've asked myself a question I previously rejected outright: is there ever a time when indifference is justified?

I've come to the conclusion that yes, it is, although it's a very limited justification and with conditions. I believe that indifference can be a legitimate defense mechanism when it comes to preserving one's own mental health.

Some people confuse being informed with being absorbed by the world's suffering twenty-four hours a day. There are battles that aren't ours and causes that manipulate us. Distinguishing what truly deserves our energy from what only seeks to consume us is, in itself, an act of responsibility.

I also believe it's justified in the face of certain personal attacks. There are people who seek to provoke us, who feed off our reaction. In such cases, indifference is not passivity; it's a shield.

It's the most effective tool for saying, "What you do or say has no power over me." It's an active, almost militant indifference, which has nothing to do with the apathy of someone who simply doesn't want to get involved in what truly matters. Ultimately, it's knowing when to look and when to look away to protect who you are.

Estoy cansada de tanta indiferencia.
Durante mucho tiempo, pensar en la indiferencia me provocaba una mezcla de rabia y perplejidad. No entendía cómo alguien podía cruzarse de brazos ante una injusticia, o mirar hacia otro lado cuando algo importante se rompía a su alrededor.
Lo veía como una forma de cobardía, o peor, de complicidad silenciosa. Hasta que un día, entendí que la indiferencia no es una acción, sino todo lo contrario: es una ausencia. Es el acto de negarse a sentir, a implicarse, a mover un dedo por lo que ocurre fuera del perímetro de uno mismo.

Y eso es precisamente lo que la hace tan peligrosa. En mi modo de ver (quizá alguien piense distinto, es posible) la indiferencia es un vacío de todo. Es la nada absoluta.
Cuando una persona es indiferente a los problemas de su comunidad, a las necesidades de quienes la rodean o a las causas que importan a la sociedad, está diciendo, sin necesidad de que medien palabras, que su burbuja es lo único real y lo único que importa (como si fuera posible vivir en una burbuja)

En su ingenuidad y egoísmo está enviando el mensaje de que el otro, el de fuera, no existe o no merece su atención. Con el tiempo, he llegado a pensar que esa actitud no habla tanto de lo que ocurre fuera, como de lo que ocurre dentro de la persona indiferente. Habla de un agotamiento, quizás, o de un miedo profundo a implicarse y salir lastimado.
No tengo idea. A lo mejor, en el peor de los casos, esa indiferencia hable de un egoísmo tan sólido que no deja espacio para nada más en su vida.

Pero también he aprendido, a base de muchas experiencias personales a lo largo de los años y de sucesos con mis hijos y colegas, que en la vida nada es en blanco y negro. Y me he hecho una pregunta que antes rechazaba de plano: ¿hay algún momento en que la indiferencia esté justificada?
He llegado a la conclusión de que sí, aunque es una justificación muy limitada y con condiciones. Creo que la indiferencia puede ser un mecanismo de defensa legítimo cuando se trata de preservar la propia salud mental.

Hay quien confunde estar informado con estar absorbido por el dolor del mundo las veinticuatro horas del día. Hay batallas que no son las nuestras y causas que nos manipulan. Distinguir lo que realmente merece nuestra energía de lo que solo busca consumirnos es, en sí mismo, un acto de responsabilidad.

También creo que está justificada ante ciertos ataques personales. Hay personas que buscan provocarnos, que se alimentan de nuestra reacción. En esos casos, la indiferencia no es pasividad, es un escudo.
Es la herramienta más eficaz para decir: "lo que tú haces o dices no tiene poder sobre mí". Es una indiferencia activa, casi militante, que nada tiene que ver con la apatía del que simplemente no quiere implicarse en lo que importa de verdad. Es, en definitiva, saber cuándo mirar y cuándo apartar la vista para proteger lo que uno es.
