There's a background noise in our society that many mistake for conversation, and that noise is gossip. We hear it in coffee shops, in offices, at some family gatherings, and, of course, on social media.
It disguises itself as concern, as a simple comment, or as "catching up," but let's not fool ourselves: it's one of the most common and destructive ills of our time. I've witnessed its corrosive power; I've seen how it can erode years of trust in a single afternoon and how it can turn a person into a character, stripping them of their humanity.
I'm talking about gossip.

I remember once, at university, how a colleague's name started circulating by word of mouth. Someone mentioned that her album wasn't that good, another added that her previous success was surely due to connections, and a third finished with a comment about her personal life, suggesting that was why she seemed "absent-minded."

No one there had the facts, no one had spoken to her. They were constructing a fictional story from scraps of assumptions and envy, and they were enjoying it.

I got up from the table feeling deeply uneasy. Not because I was better than them, but because I recognized the dynamic. It's easy to fall into that trap, to feel that small, instant gratification of being part of a group that shares a secret or a criticism. But that gratification is an illusion. What you're really doing is diminishing yourself.

There are few things more undesirable than gossip. It's unpleasant to meddle in things that don't concern you, and it always ends up costing you dearly. Not only because of the harm you can cause, which is obvious, but also because of the harm you do to yourself.

When you talk about others, you stop taking care of yourself. Your energy, your time, and your analytical skills are wasted on other people's lives. You become a gossipy spectator of a movie you're not in, while your own life plays out in an empty theater.

Furthermore, gossip has a boomerang effect. What you say about others speaks more about you than about them. It reveals your insecurities, your need for validation, and your moral pettiness. I have decided, with determination, to distance myself from that dynamic.

When someone tries to drag me into that swamp, I change the subject or withdraw. I don't want to be part of the committee that judges without evidence, nor part of the group that buries someone with words. Silence, in those cases, is not complicity; it is an active decision not to get my hands dirty.

Hay un ruido de fondo en nuestra sociedad que muchos confunden con conversación, y ese ruido es el chisme. Lo escuchamos en las cafeterías, en las oficinas, en algunas reuniones familiares y, por supuesto, en las redes sociales.
Se disfraza de preocupación, de simple comentario o de "ponerte al día", pero no nos engañemos: es uno de los males más comunes y destructivos de nuestro tiempo. He sido testigo de su poder corrosivo, he visto cómo puede desgastar la confianza de años en una sola tarde y cómo es capaz de convertir a una persona en un personaje, despojándola de su humanidad.
Les hablo del chisme.

Recuerdo una vez, en la universidad, cómo el nombre de una colega empezó a circular de boca en boca. Alguien mencionó que su disco no era tan bueno, otro añadió que seguramente su éxito anterior se lo debía a contactos, y un tercero remató con un comentario sobre su vida personal, sugiriendo que por eso andaba "despistada".

Nadie allí tenía los datos, nadie había hablado con ella. Estaban construyendo una historia ficticia con retazos de suposiciones y envidia, y la estaban disfrutando.
Me levanté de la mesa sintiendo una incomodidad profunda. No porque yo fuera mejor que ellos, sino porque reconocía la mecánica. Es fácil caer en esa dinámica, sentir esa pequeña gratificación instantánea al sentirte parte de un grupo que comparte un secreto o una crítica. Pero esa gratificación es un espejismo. Lo que realmente haces es empequeñecerte a ti mismo.

Hay pocas cosas más indeseables que el chisme. Es desagradable meterse en lo que no te importa siempre acaba saliendo caro. No solo por el daño que puedas causar, que es evidente, sino por el daño que te causas a ti.
Cuando hablas de los demás, dejas de ocuparte de ti mismo. Tu energía, tu tiempo y tu capacidad de análisis se van por el desagüe de vidas ajenas. Te conviertes en un espectador chismoso de una película en la que no participas, mientras tu propia vida se proyecta en una sala vacía.

Además, el chisme tiene un efecto bumerán. Lo que dices de otros habla más de ti que de ellos. Revela tus inseguridades, tu necesidad de validación y tu pequeñez moral. He decidido, con determinación, alejarme de esa dinámica.
Cuando alguien intenta arrastrarme a esa ciénaga, cambio de tema o me retiro. No quiero ser parte del comité que juzga sin pruebas ni de la tertulia que entierra a alguien con palabras. El silencio, en esos casos, no es complicidad, es una decisión activa de no ensuciarme.
