Rogue Protocol - Martha Wells
source
As in book 1 and 2, I liked Murderbots distinct voice. I also liked its relationship to Micky (btw I was reading the audiobook so no idea how these names are spelled).
But overall... I just found it a bit mid.
I know these are novellas, but I was hoping for more connection between the stories. We get new humans again, and a lot of action. And I think the action is the main problem I had with this book. It was confusing to me at times. And it also felt like I can never predict what abilities Murderbot has and what abilities the ship and all the bots on board have. So it can sometimes feel like a deus ex machina when someone dials into a feed, or turns on a bot from afar/hacks it. And sometimes things like that dont work, but I can never fully predict when something might be a possibility, or what might bring huge risks with it. And with that, it just felt to me that the stakes were a bit low? Like I said, because I never knew when things were really bad or when Murderbot or whoever can just talk to another bot or dial into a feed or whatever to solve the problem.
I did like the short friendship between Murderbot and Micky, and wish there had been more of that. Especially Murderbots confused feelings in the end. Even if it didnt want to call Micky a friend up until the end, I think everything about Micky will give it a lot to ponder about in the next time. So I was a bit sad we didnt get more of that character development, and it just ended.
So overall.. idk if I will continue the series? Like I said, it was at times so confusing to me. I even have a hard time describing what exactly happened at the station now. Evil bot thing killed Micky. Some humans are safe. But yeah.. maybe that just wasnt really my cup of tea. And I so wanted to like it.
