Hello dear friends, greetings to all the Aliens! After some time, I've been able to return and share with you all. But first, I want to thank everyone who supported me last week. My entry for the previous contest came in 2nd place, a great achievement that I owe to all of you who always support me. That's why I'm back, recharged with creative energy, to share my entry for this week's contest. I've created an illustration of the Cornealus card. I've done a bit differently with this eye, which has tentacles. I've used a realistic tone, wrapping it in bits of flesh and arteries to give it a terrifying and grotesque appearance. I used gray cardstock and Prismacolor colored pencils to color it. Here's an explanation of the process; I hope you like it.

Hola queridos amigos, saludo a todos los Aliens después de un tiempo he podido volver por aquí y poder compartir con ustedes. No sin antes agradecer a todas las personas que me apoyaron la semana pasada, mi publicación para el concurso anterior quedó en 2do lugar, fue un gran logro el cual se lo debo a todos los que siempre me apoyan. Y es por eso que vengo recargado de energía creativa para compartir con ustedes mi aporte para el concurso de esta semana. He realizado una ilustración de la carta Cornealus, este ojo que tiene tentáculos lo he realizado algo diferente, con un tono realista lo he hecho envuelto en restos de carne y arterias para darle un aspecto aterrador y grotesco. Para pintarlo he utilizado una cartulina de color gris y para pintar mis lápices de color Prismacolor, aquí los dejo con la explicación de como ha sido el proceso, espero que les guste.

To begin, unlike my previous drawings, this time I started without a sketch. I began drawing directly. Since it's an eye, I started by drawing the white part, the cornea, which gives this creature its name. I used white wax crayon to outline the entire white area, leaving the center unpainted, which would be the retina. For the retina, I first started painting with blue, and for the iris, I used a base of purple to which I added other tones to create contrast.

Para empezar, al contrario de mis dibujos anteriores esta vez comencé sin hacer un boceto, sino que comencé a dibujar directamente, como se trata de un ojo, comencé a dibujar la parte blanca del ojo, que le da el nombre a esta criatura, la cornea. Así que utilizo el color blanco de cera y así voy delimitando toda la parte blanca dejando el centro sin pintar que sería la retina. Para el espacio de la retina primero comienzo a pintar con color azul y lo que sería el iris del ojo, lo que le da color utilizo una base de color púrpura a la cual le iré agregando otros tonos para generar contraste.

From here on I will concentrate on painting the iris, as the purpose is to make it very realistic, using the colors well and painting layer by layer will allow me to achieve good realism, so I start mixing colors, I also add a light turquoise green to the combination, so that the eye has some illumination in the iris, while on the outer edges I apply dark purple colors mixed with some dark blue.

De aquí en adelante me concentra´re en pintar el iris, como el propósito es hacerlo muy realista, el utilizar bien los colores y pintar capa por capa permitirá alcanzar un buen realismo, así que comienzo a mezclar colores, agrego también en la combinación un color verde turquesa claro, para que el ojo tenga una iluminación en el iris, mientras que en los bordes exteriores voy aplicando colores púrpura oscuros mezclados con algo de azul oscuro.

Then I continue adding more tones and darkening the ones I've used so far. As you can see, I'm now using the darkest blue to match the purple. It's like painting a gradient towards dark without losing that purple tone from the card's original design. Once I've painted the iris as I wanted, I recolor the cornea, but this time with a white charcoal pencil, which is more intense than white crayon.

Luego sigo agregando mas tonos y oscureciendo los que he ido utilizando hasta ahora, así pueden ver como ya voy por el azul más oscuro para que haga juego con el púrpura, es como pintar degradado hacia lo oscuro sin que pierda ese tono púrpura del diseño original de la carta. Una vez ya he pintado el iris como lo había deseado vuelvo a colorear la cornea pero esta vez con lápiz blanco carboncillo que es más intenso que el color blanco de cera.

You could say that the most important part of the illustration is already done; now all that's left is to add one big detail. I add shading around the edges of the entire circle. This shading makes the drawing even more realistic, and I also add small red lines that will represent blood vessels. After that, with a white pencil, I draw the flesh around it that will support Cornealus, showing pieces torn off and severed arteries. I paint all of this with a terracotta red base.

Se podría decir que hasta aquí la parte más importante de la ilustración ya esta hecha, ahora solo falta agregar un gran detalle. A todo el circulo le agrego sombra por los bordes, el hacer esta sombra el dibujo cobra aún mas realismo así como también le voy haciendo pequeñas líneas de color rojo que serán los vasos sanguíneos. Luego de eso con lápiz blanco voy dibujando la carne a su alrededor que sostendrá a Cornealus, donde tendrá pedazos arrancados y donde se veran arterias arrancadas. Todo esto lo voy pintando con una base color rojo terracota.

Then I add warm colors. My goal is for the flesh to look alive, but also to show that it's in the process of drying out, making it even more terrifying. So I draw small holes, which I darken, while in the upper parts I create highlights, painting them with white. Once I've done all that, I start retouching details with white paint and a fine brush, especially in the iris. I make a white patch that reflects the light, which makes the eye look more realistic. Also, near the shadows, I draw points of light that gradually make the design look very realistic. And that's how it turned out.

Luego voy agregando colores cálidos, mi objetivo es que la carne se vea viva pero también que se vea que está en ese proceso de secarse y quedar aun más aterrador. Asi que voy haciendo dibujos de pequeños agujeros los cuales voy oscureciendo, mientras que en las partes superiores hare relejos de luz por lo que voy pintando con color blanco. Una vez he realizado toda esa parte comienzo a retocar detalles con pintura blanca y un fino pincel, especialmente en el iris, hago una mancha blanca la cual está reflejando la luz, esto hace que el ojo se vea más realista, así también cerca de las sombras voy dibujando puntos de luz que poco a poco hacen que el diseño se vea muy realista. Así quedó finalizado.

Here's the result. What do you think? It looks like any horror movie creature from the '80s, back when special effects were practical and looked incredibly realistic, like in John Carpenter's "The Thing," hehe. In the video, you can see how I achieved that effect. It's nothing complicated; it's simply a matter of making smooth, circular strokes so you can see where there's more and where there's less. Así ha quedado el resultado ¿Qué les parece? luce como toda criatura de terror de película de los años 80, donde los efectos especiales eran prácticos y se veían muy realistas, como en la película "The Thing" de Jhon Carpenter jejeje. En el video pueden apreciar como logré ese efecto, no es nada del otro mundo, simplemente es hacer los trazos de manera circular y suaves, así se puede observar donde falta y donde sobra. Por ahora me despido, y será hasta pronto.
