23 commentsWhen I first took up gardening, I was quite appalled by the insects and worms in the soil. But one adapts! In any case, I don’t work as effectively with gloves, and aren’t there health benefits to getting your hands dirty?
I'm not so squeamish with worms now. I don't mind them so much as I know they're good for the soil, I just flick some soil over them so I don't see them. In most cases they squiggle back down themselves pretty quick anyway.
I adore worms. I love finding big fat ones and having a little chat with them in the palm of my hand. Incredible creatures.
Urghhh!! I still can't bring myself to touch them, or any animals. I find it really odd to touch a living object that's not a human behaviour, that's why I'm not keen on pets.
I do say good morning to my plants every morning 😄
I like using the big fat ones for fish bait.
That's murder:)
When I said I adapted, I didn't mean going as far as to touch the little feckers. No, I lift them to safety with a trowel, and not a word passes between us.
I had to laugh. Here's me all like well 'ard not using gloves and yesterday got bit by something...
Thank goodness for antisan.
Crikey, that looks sore! I used to be bitten by everything and his mother, but then I discovered homeopathy!
Whatever works for you! The bumps are still there this morning but they have faded and aren't so sore. Jamie went straight to 'i hope it wasn't a redback' which was conceivable I suppose but ... Off to google 'what happens if you get bitten by a redback'
Well I wouldn't be havin' an auld chat with them like Ms. River, but I no longer feel the urge to chop them in half like I used to:)
ha for you there sure is. How do you do it?
I read once that guy health started at the fingertips, which touch the soil and I loved that idea ... In a very scientific way, we SHOULD be connected to the earth!
Thank you for the tip!!! How fun is that?!
I once had a gardening friend who worked as a server in a hoity toity restaurant. He would soak his fingertips in bleach after every day in the garden that was followed by his shift serving food to hoity toity customers.
Omg BLEACH!!! that's crazy and gross.
Agreed! But his fingernails were things of wonder whenever he put down a plate before a customer. He was very well tended himself.
wow, congrats @owasco and @davedickeyyall! 👏😍

STOPEverytime I think gloves are a good idea I can't do anything properly so I think bugger it, who needs nails anyway, and use my bare hands. Nothing a nailbrush can't handle. There's something rally tactile about it as well.
I only use gloves when I have to shovel a lot, use a pick ax, or move around wood and that type of thing.

I only wear gloves when working with my raspberry or others plants with thorns. Although that often doesn't really help that much either.
For other garden chores I don't wear them.
I got raspberries without thorns.
