El viernes no empezó mal.
Empezó peor.

Una molestia ahí, como piedrita en el zapato. Ella siguió porque aquí el que para pierde.

Pensó en dinero.
Pensó en trabajo.
Pensó…

El país se le había metido en la cabeza. Clientes que no llaman. Pagos que no llegan. Una sola empresa sosteniendo todo como número de circo. Para colmo, sonó el teléfono. Dijeron que algo estaba mal. Sintió un corrientazo.

El pensamiento automático: me voy a morir.
Después el otro: no joda, ahorita no.

No comió. O sí…, un cambur. El morral pesado. Diez cuadras de penitencia. Dio su clase de yoga como si nada, porque cuando entra ahí, ellos respiran. Ella en modo anestesia.

Pero el dolor volvió.

Dormir de un lado, del otro, siempre la misma sensación: un cráneo con algo que no terminaba de acomodarse.

El sábado entendió que estaba en modo supervivencia.
Pensar, pensar, pensar.
Limpiar. ¡Qué loca!
No leer.
No tocar nada que obligara a pensar más.

Salir fue una excusa para no quedarse sola con la cabeza. La perrita, mandados, medicamentos ajenos.

El domingo, como pudo, parque, fotos. Yoga de la risa: bajar los decibeles.
Alguien le dice que se ponga hielo en la cabeza. Se ríe. Luego lo hace. El frío como revelación.

Y, por fin, los reales.
Pagar el alquiler.
Seguir viva.

Mientras tanto, él no estaba bien tampoco.

Pensó en ella el sábado.
Eso no era noticia.
La noticia fue el pensamiento.

No fue deseo.
Fue ausencia.

La idea de no saber más de ella se le metió en el coco y los intestinos se movieron.

Le dolía la cabeza desde el viernes. Un dolor que también decidió quedarse. Para remate, una fiebre boba. Dolía hasta la cédula. El país estaba lleno de virus no oficiales, enfermedades sin comunicado, contagios prohibidos de mencionar.

El domingo el cuerpo se rindió. Recuerdos del covid. El miedo no era morirse: era no poder enfermarse.

Cuando ambos se contaron el fin de semana, la historia cerró sola.
Dos cabezas jodidas.
Dos cuerpos reaccionando.
Un país apretando.

Él quiso decirle más.
Que la quería…
Que era importante.
Que cada vez que pensaba en ella algo se le tapaba.

No dijo nada.

Recordó que una vez le dijo que era respiración, pero mintió. Era su ataque de asma.

Subida de tensión.
Ella, le subía el colesterol.
Le tensaba las arterias.

Ella siguió con su hielo.
Él se puso tapabocas.

Ninguno dijo lo que pensó.
Ninguno contó el miedo.

Y ahí estuvo el verdadero terror.
No en el dolor.
No en la fiebre.
No en el país.

Sino en seguir queriéndose desde la cornisa.

Then the next one: not now, for fuck’s sake.

She didn’t eat. Or maybe she did… a banana. The backpack is heavy. Ten blocks of penance. She taught her yoga class like nothing was happening, because once she’s in there, they breathe. She goes numb.

But the pain came back.

Sleeping on one side, then the other—always the same feeling: a skull with something that wouldn’t settle.

On Saturday, she realized she was in survival mode.
Thinking, thinking, thinking.
Cleaning. Crazy, right?
Not reading.
Not touching anything that might force her to think more.

Going out was just an excuse to avoid being alone with her head. The dog. Errands. Other people’s medications.

On Sunday, she managed to park. Laughter yoga: turning the volume down. Someone told her to put ice on her head. She laughed. Then she did it. The cold, like a revelation.

And finally, the money.
Pay the rent.
Stay alive.

Meanwhile, he wasn’t doing well either.

He thought about her on Saturday.
That wasn’t news.
The news was the thought itself.

It wasn’t desire.
It was an absence.

The idea of not knowing anything about her anymore got into his head, and his gut tightened.

His head had been hurting since Friday. A pain that also decided to stay. To make matters worse, a stupid fever. Everything hurt—even his ID. The country was full of unofficial viruses, illnesses without press releases, infections you weren’t supposed to talk about.

On Sunday, as he could, he went to the park to take pictures. Then, laughter yoga to lower the decibels.

A country is squeezed.

He wanted to tell her more.
That he loved her…
That she mattered.
That every time he thought about her, something inside him tightened.

He said nothing.

He remembered once telling her she was breathing—but he lied. She was his asthma attack.

Blood pressure rising.
She raised his cholesterol.
Tightened his arteries.

She kept using her ice.
He put on a face mask.

Neither of them said what they thought.
Neither of them confessed to the fear.

And that’s where the real terror was.
Not in the pain.
Not in the fever.
Not in the country.

The terror was to keep loving each other from the ledge.
