Planting tomatoes today
A few days ago, I put some tomato seeds in a recycled seedling tray. It was a plastic food container. I cut it in half and used it as a seedling tray.
I put some seeds from a large, round tomato in there. I had kept it in the fridge, but it went bad because I didn’t handle it properly. I gave the very ripe part to the turtles, and I used the rest, which was still in good condition, for germination.
I didn’t think so many tomato seeds would sprout. Now I don’t have much room to plant them. So I decided to plant them one by one in other pots where there are already some plants, like cucumbers and eggplants.
I’ve also filled 10 black bags with my homemade potting mix. It contains homemade compost made from my tree trimmings and dry leaves. I added a layer of my potting mix on top, which is made with sand, ash, and worm castings.
After filling the 10 bags, I removed a handful of the largest seedlings from the seedbed. Along with the large ones, some small seedlings have also come up.
Here I’ve placed only 7 plants. In two of the bags, I’ve planted two seedlings. I’ll plant the rest later in other bags.
After planting them in the bags, I added my prepared potting mix. It contains black soil, a little sand, and some rice hulls, along with worm castings, which are always included.
Once my seedlings are planted, I add a little water and let them rest. Tomorrow I’ll place them somewhere out of direct sunlight. When they’ve had a little more time to grow, I’ll move them to a spot where they’ll get good sunlight for about 4 to 6 hours.
That’s all for today in my garden.
