These end-of-year days are special. Not only because of the celebrations and everything else, but because it's during this time that we sit down to reflect on life and all that we have to be grateful for. The other day I did some shopping for the house and spent quite a bit of money. It's true that I spent more than my husband and I had planned. When he understandably complained, I apologized for breaking our agreement, but then I explained that I had been thinking about something: while I was in Paris, I had everything, but I didn't have them.

Now that I have them, I want to give them (him and our children) everything that makes them happy and that I can give them. Especially considering that nothing material in life is eternal or truly belongs to us: everything is a loan, ephemeral. Not a trophy to possess.

This is the most practical truth I know: nothing material in life is eternal or truly belongs to us. Things come, are used, wear out, are lost, or are exchanged.

We operate within a system of temporary loans. The house, money, objects, even our own bodies. Treating anything as a permanent trophy, something we've conquered and that is now "ours" forever, is a fantasy. It's a lie we tell ourselves, and sooner or later, life takes it upon itself to disprove it.

Therefore, the wise thing to do is to receive without pride. Pride is the problem. Pride makes us believe, deep down, that we deserve everything we get. That we've earned it solely through our own merit and that, therefore, it's a right.

And it's precisely this belief that makes it hurt so much when we lose it. The pain isn't just from the loss of the object, but from the fall of the ego that had clung to it.

If you receive something—a success, a good fortune, praise—without that layer of pride, as a circumstantial gift of effort and luck, you are protecting yourself from the future pain of its eventual loss.

The grateful person, on the other hand, receives with humility and lets go without resentment, without suffering excessively. It's not that it doesn't hurt. It does. But the pain doesn't turn into prolonged suffering or bitterness, because it knows that this is the natural order of things. Everything comes and everything goes. Accepting this flow is the foundation of inner peace.

Here's the practical part: letting go without attachment is maturity, not wastefulness or naiveté. In my case, I know I can earn back the money I overspent through my work.
It's recoverable.

But time is another matter. The time away from my family, the laughter of my children that I couldn't see while I was in Paris—those moments I can never get back.

That's the true cost.

Attachment should be directed toward what is irretrievable (time, shared experiences, love), not toward what is replaceable (objects, money).

Clinging to material things doesn't prevent them from being lost. It only prolongs suffering. You're fighting against a current that's stronger than you.

On the other hand, those who learn to let go of material things live more lightly. They don't depend on money or possessions for their happiness because they know they are tools, not foundations.

They walk lightly, with a calm and happy mind, because their inner balance isn't tied to what might disappear tomorrow.

In the end, the only thing we truly have is the present and those we share it with. Everything else is a loan that, sooner or later, must be repaid.

Estos días de fin de año son días especiales. No solo por las celebraciones y demás, sino porque es en estos días cuando nos sentamos a reflexionar sobre la vida y todo lo que tenemos que agradecer.
El otro día hice unas compras para la casa y gasté bastante dinero. Es verdad que más de lo que mi esposo y yo planificamos. Ante su lógico reclamo, me disculpé por incumplir lo pactado, pero luego le expliqué que había estado pensando en una cosa: mientras estuve en París, tenía de todo, pero no los tuve a ellos.

Ahora que los tengo, quisiera darles (a él y a nuestros hijos) todo lo que les hace feliz y puedo darles. Sobre todo pensando que nada material en la vida es eterno ni nos pertenece: todo es un préstamo, efímero. No un trofeo para poseer.

Esta es la verdad más práctica que conozco: nada material en la vida es eterno ni nos pertenece. Las cosas llegan, se usan, se desgastan, se pierden o se cambian.
Operamos en un sistema de préstamos temporales. La casa, el dinero, los objetos, incluso nuestro propio cuerpo.
Tratar cualquier cosa como un trofeo permanente, algo que hemos conquistado y que ahora es "nuestro" para siempre, es una fantasía. Es una mentira que nos contamos y que, tarde o temprano, la vida se encarga de desmentir.

Por tanto, lo inteligente es recibir sin orgullo. El orgullo es el problema. El orgullo nos hace creer, en el fondo, que nos merecemos todo lo que obtenemos. Que lo hemos ganado solo con nuestro mérito y que, por lo tanto, es un derecho.
Y es precisamente esa creencia la que hace que duela tanto cuando lo perdemos. El dolor no es solo por la pérdida del objeto, sino por la caída del ego que se había aferrado a él.
Si recibes algo –un éxito, un bien, un elogio– sin esa capa de orgullo, como un regalo circunstancial del esfuerzo y de la suerte, estás protegiéndote del futuro dolor de su eventual pérdida.

El agradecido, por el contrario, recibe con humildad y deja ir sin resentimiento, sin sufrir en exceso. No es que no duela. Duele. Pero el dolor no se transforma en un sufrimiento prolongado ni en amargura, porque sabe que así es el orden natural de las cosas. Todo llega y todo se va. Aceptar este flujo es la base de la paz interior.

Aquí está la parte práctica: desprenderse sin apego es madurez, no es despilfarro ni ingenuidad. En mi caso, el dinero que gasté de más, sé que puedo volver a ganarlo con mi trabajo.
Es recuperable.
Pero el tiempo es otra cosa. El tiempo lejos de mi familia, la risa de mis hijos que no pude ver mientras estuve en París, esos momentos no podré recuperarlos nunca.
Ese es el verdadero costo.
El apego debe dirigirse hacia lo irrecuperable (el tiempo, las experiencias compartidas, el amor), no hacia lo reemplazable (los objetos, el dinero).

Aferrarse a lo material no evita que se pierda. Solo prolonga el sufrimiento. Luchas contra una corriente que es más fuerte que tú.
En cambio, el que aprende a desprenderse de lo material, vive de una forma más ligera. No depende del dinero o de las cosas para su felicidad, porque sabe que son instrumentos, no cimientos.
Camina ligero, con la mente en calma y feliz, porque su equilibrio interno no está atado a lo que puede desaparecer mañana.
Al final, lo único que realmente tenemos es el presente y a quienes compartimos con él. Todo lo demás es un préstamo que, tarde o temprano, hay que devolver.
