Hace poco les comentaba sobre un nuevo taller de costura que había comenzado en mi vecindario. La novedad en ese momento era que no tenía ningún tipo de publicidad, lo que a mí me generaba bastante curiosidad puesto que la publicidad es indispensable para darse a conocer, sobre todo cuando se está comenzando en una nueva locación.

Dos días atrás pasé por el negocio y le pregunté a la dueña si me podía hacer el arreglo a una chaqueta. Previamente le había preguntado lo mismo a mi costurera de siempre y me comentó que no lo podía hacer puesto que se necesitaba una máquina con mayores prestaciones que la que ella tiene.

La dueña del nuevo local, Teresa, se llama, me informó que si podía hacer el arreglo, que ella si contaba en su taller con los equipos necesarios para hacer ese tipo de reparaciones en telas gruesas, donde para pasar la costura es importante tener agujas especiales de un calibre mayor que el convencional.

Como vi la buena disposición de la señora para conversar busqué satisfacer un poco mi curiosidad. Le pregunté por qué luego de varios meses de haber iniciado en este sitio no tenían ninguna publicidad exterior, si no le importaba que la gente fuese conociendo el negocio.

Me dijo que el fuerte de su negocio no era la confección a nivel individual ni los arreglos personales, ese era un trabajo que hacía como complemento.

Su actividad principal proviene de coser a dos distribuidores que le llevan con regularidad suficiente trabajo para la confección. Por otra parte, agregó, no creía que fuese necesario tener ninguna publicidad para que la gente del barrio se enterara que estaba operando un nuevo taller de costura. Su misma publicidad es la ubicación. Al estar en la vía principal todo el que pasa frente al negocio ve las máquinas y el movimiento del trabajo. El que está interesado, como yo, sencillamente se para y hace las preguntas de su interés. La respuesta me pareció más que convincente.

Al terminar de conversar con la señora Teresa me quedé pensando en los diferentes aspectos que intervienen en la competencia, entre ellos contar con un equipamiento más adecuado a los requerimientos de una clientela potencial.

A pesar de la relación de amistad que tengo con mi costurera de siempre hay momentos como este donde necesariamente tengo que buscar alguna alternativa distinta para resolver el arreglo que necesito. Y no se trata de un asunto de deslealtad ni mucho menos, son razones prácticas las que nos pueden hacer cambiar de un proveedor de bienes o servicios que hasta cierto momento nos ha resuelto nuestros requerimientos.

Si mi costurera tuviese el equipamiento necesario yo no tendría necesidad de buscar una alternativa diferente, después de todo buscar una alternativa nueva siempre conlleva cierto riesgo. No tengo la menor idea si el trabajo de la nueva costurera va a ser de calidad o al final me entregará una chapuza, o en el peor de los casos me dañe la prenda.

Seguramente que la señora Teresa también tenía todo eso en mente cuando se decidió a instalar ese taller en nuestra zona.

Por su experiencia quizá intuía que ninguna de las costureras del barrio podría tener un equipamiento como el que ella tiene. Lo que sin duda la pone en otro nivel.

Quizá sus máquinas además de poder coser telas gruesas pueden tener otros tipos de acabados. Todo esto sin duda que le permite una sana competencia en un sector donde la oferta de prestadoras de servicio es más o menos abundante.

Al recibir mi prenda me daré cuenta si además de esos aspectos mencionados arriba también está presente la calidad y el cuidado en el resultado del producto terminado. Es muy probable que así sea porque de otro modo la señora Teresa no estaría en el nivel donde está.

I recently told you about a new sewing workshop that had opened in my neighborhood. What was unusual at the time was that it had no advertising whatsoever, which made me quite curious since advertising is essential for getting your name out there, especially when you're starting out in a new location.

Two days ago, I stopped by the shop and asked the owner if she could repair a jacket for me. I had previously asked my regular seamstress the same question, and she told me she couldn't do it because it required a machine with more features than the one she has.

The owner of the new shop, Teresa, told me that she could do the repair, as she had the necessary equipment in her workshop to carry out this type of repair on thick fabrics, which require special needles with a larger gauge than conventional ones.

Seeing how willing the lady was to talk, I decided to satisfy my curiosity a little. I asked her why, several months after starting up in this location, they didn't have any outdoor advertising, and whether she didn't care about people getting to know the business.

She told me that the strength of her business was not individual clothing manufacturing or personal alterations; that was work she did as a supplement.

Her main activity comes from sewing for two distributors who bring her enough work on a regular basis for clothing manufacturing. On the other hand, she added, she did not think it was necessary to have any advertising for people in the neighborhood to find out that a new sewing workshop was operating. Its location is its own advertising. Being on the main road, everyone who passes by the business sees the machines and the work in progress. Anyone who is interested, like me, simply stops and asks questions. I found her answer more than convincing.

After talking to Mrs. Teresa, I was left thinking about the different aspects that come into play in competition, including having equipment that is better suited to the requirements of potential customers.

Despite the friendly relationship I have with my usual seamstress, there are times like this when I have to look for a different alternative to get the alterations I need done. And it's not a matter of disloyalty, far from it. There are practical reasons that can make us change from a supplier of goods or services that, until a certain point, has met our requirements.

If my seamstress had the necessary equipment, I would not need to look for a different alternative. After all, looking for a new alternative always carries a certain risk. I have no idea if the new seamstress's work will be of good quality or if she will end up doing a botched job, or in the worst case, damage the garment.

Surely Mrs. Teresa also had all this in mind when she decided to set up that workshop in our area.

From her experience, she may have sensed that none of the seamstresses in the neighborhood could have equipment like hers. This undoubtedly puts her on another level.

Perhaps her machines, in addition to being able to sew thick fabrics, can also produce other types of finishes. All of this undoubtedly allows her to compete healthily in a sector where there is a more or less abundant supply of service providers.

When I receive my garment, I will see if, in addition to these aspects, the finished product is also of high quality and has been made with care. This is very likely to be the case, because otherwise Mrs. Teresa would not be at the level she is at.
