US LNG Leads Europe's Energy Landscape in January
In January, the United States bumped up its share of Europe's liquefied natural gas imports to a whopping 60%. That's a jump from 53% just a year ago, and it's got everyone paying attention to how Europe powers its homes and factories.
This surge didn't happen overnight. Back in 2022, with Russia Ukraine issue, Europe started cutting ties with Russian gas supplies. Pipelines that once carried cheap Russian fuel went quiet, leaving a huge gap. The US stepped in with its booming LNG exports, shipped across the Atlantic in massive tankers. Countries like France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands scooped up most of it, about 75% of the US shipments last year.
Europe's been hustling to keep energy prices stable and lights on during winters. US gas has helped fill that void, making up over half of LNG imports in recent months.
But here's the catch, it's pricier than what came from Russia or even other spots like Norway and Algeria. Looking ahead, experts warn this could climb to 80% by 2030 if trends hold.
Leaders like European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have chatted about boosting these ties, even amid trade talks with the US. So, this January milestone shows Europe's energy landscape evolving fast.
