The Most Enjoyable Time I Had for Free
Honestly, when I really sit down to think about the best time I’ve ever had without paying a cent, a lot of memories come to mind. I’ve had many good moments in my life where I didn’t fully carry the financial burden alone. Even when I didn’t pay everything, I usually contributed something small just to feel involved and make the experience more enjoyable. But if I’m being very honest, the best time I had without spending a single dime was when I visited my senior brother at his place in Lagos some years ago.
At that time, my brother was still a bachelor, so life around him was much more relaxed and flexible. There were no major responsibilities pulling his attention in different directions, which made it easier for us to bond and actually spend quality time together. From the moment I arrived, everything felt different from my normal routine at home. The environment, freedom, and even the small daily experiences felt special to me.
One thing I can never forget was the electricity. My brother had solar panels installed in his house, so light was never an issue. We had power almost all the time, day and night. This was something that felt almost unreal to me because back then, when my mum and I were staying, electricity was very unstable. Sometimes, we wouldn’t even have light for up to ten hours straight. So, being in a place where power was constant felt like luxury, even though I wasn’t paying for it. I could charge my phone freely, stay up late, and just enjoy the comfort without worrying about darkness or heat.
Another highlight of that visit was his PS4. I spent countless hours playing games, sometimes alone and sometimes with friends who came around. I played so much that I almost lost track of time. Those moments were pure joy—no stress, no responsibilities, just fun. It felt like a proper holiday, especially because I didn’t have school pressure hanging over my head.
During that same period, he also took me to Shoprite, which was another exciting experience for me at the time. He bought me a wristwatch and some clothes, and I remember feeling really happy and grateful. It wasn’t just about the items themselves, but the feeling of being cared for and treated. Everything felt special because it was happening during the holidays, a time when i could just have enough fun.
I honestly enjoyed myself so much that I didn’t even realize how fast time was going. I was eating well, playing games, sleeping comfortably, and just living freely. At some point, I had enjoyed his money and generosity so much that he jokingly—but seriously—told me it was time to start packing and head back home.
Looking back now, that experience stands out because it didn’t cost me anything financially, yet it gave me so much happiness.
Thanks for reading.
