To respond to this week's prompts, I'll need to take a small trip into the past, since I did work in offices before and technically could have done part of that work remotely.

In nearly 20 years of professional life, I have held various types of jobs — some unavoidably in-person, as they required direct contact with clients.

I'm referring to my work as a bank teller, which I held for almost 8 years. It was the 2000s, and at least in my country, the option to pay bills through an online transfer did not yet exist.

That decade coincided with the boom of emigration to Spain, during which thousands of my compatriots sought a better life in Europe. Due to the practically nonexistent landline coverage and the exorbitant prices of mobile telephony, this gave rise to a proliferation of phone booths and internet cafés.

I was one of 17 tellers at the headquarters of the telephone company that provided service to those phone booths. The line would often wrap around the entire hall and spill out onto the street for at least a hundred meters.

In that era and working context, my job was entirely in-person — there was no way to do it remotely. Even today, there are still several payment counters staffed by human tellers, despite the existence of all kinds of mobile payment applications.

In the following decades, I moved on to other areas of work. In my last position, I was an administrator for an NGO, and technically, part of the work could have been done from home or anywhere with internet access.

However, given the multiplicity of tasks I had to carry out, being in the office was necessary — to process payments to suppliers (since physical checks were issued due to donor regulations), to receive goods that needed to be verified and logged into storage before delivery, among other duties.

All of this suggests that not every job allows the flexibility of working from home or the office. That said, if I could choose one modality or the other, I believe I would opt for a hybrid schedule — half the days in the office and the other half at home — because procrastination might get the better of me if it finds me alone at home!

Para responder a las consignas de esta semana tendré que hacer un pequeño viaje al pasado ya que antes sí trabajaba en oficinas y técnicamente sí podría haber hecho parte del trabajo de manera remota.

En mis casi 20 años de actividad laboral he realizado diversos tipos de trabajos, algunos son indefectiblemente presenciales, ya que se requería contacto directo con clientes.

Me refiero al trabajo de cajera que ejercí por casi 8 años. Era la década del año 2000 y al menos en mi país no existía aun la facilidad de pagar facturas con una transferencia en línea.

Esa década coincidía con el boom del éxodo a España en el que miles de compatriotas buscaban una mejor vida en Europa. Lo cual debido a la prácticamente nula cobertura de la telefonía fija y a los exorbitantes precios de la telefonía móvil propició la proliferación de cabinas telefónicas y cibercafés.

Yo era una de las 17 cajeras de la casa central de la compañía de teléfonos que daba el servicio a las cabinas telefónicas. La fila solía dar la vuelta al salón e incluso salir a la calle por al menos unos cien metros.

En esa época y circunstancia laboral, mi trabajo era presencial, no había forma de hacerlo por teletrabajo. Aún al día de hoy hay varias bocas de cobranzas con cajeros humanos, aunque existan aplicaciones de pagos móviles de todo tipo.

Las siguientes décadas me dediqué a otras áreas de trabajo. En el último trabajo que tuve era administrativa de una ONG y técnicamente parte del trabajo la podría realizar desde la casa o cualquier sitio con internet.

Pero dada la multiplicidad de tareas que debía ejercer, era necesario estar en la oficina para realizar el pago a proveedores, porque se entregaban cheques físicos por regulaciones de los donantes, recibir artículos que debían ser verificados e ingresados a bodegas hasta que sean entregados, entre otras tareas.

Esto da a entender que no todos los trabajos permiten la flexibilidad de hacerlo en la casa o en la oficina, pero en todo caso, si pudiera elegir una modalidad u otra, creo que elegiría una jornada híbrida. La mitad de días en la oficina y la otra mitad en la casa, porque la procrastinación podría vencerme si me encuentra sola en casa!
