Reflection on Tourist Photography-Monomad challenge (ENG-ESP)
Photography from a tourist's perspective can sometimes be naive and harmful to a place or to the people who live there.
I see many travel vloggers who, when in a specific location, treat people—or rather, the stories they tell—from a perspective that appropriates them without any intention of going deeper.
For example, some describe and narrate as if they were at a zoo, or as if it were something "exotic" to be looked at, acting as distant spectators.
Clearly, culture is a barrier between people who grew up in different places, but I don't think this justifies that kind of treatment. For me, it's important to approach with empathy and with a belief in cultural relativism.
In other words, I won't judge a culture just because it's different from my own. I know this is a difficult exercise, because we all have prejudices about something or someone. However, we must make the effort to prevent this from completely dominating us.
We are talking about human beings with different beliefs. Therefore, we should not view them from a distance, but instead get closer. This isn't necessarily applicable to every moment, because I understand there are situations that are beyond our control.
My point is that we must set aside naivety and prejudice to show or tell a story that is closer to reality.
