Como todas las estrellas, Whitney Houston tuvo un gran alcance en su carrera musical, aunque desafortunadamente su historia detrás del escenario no fuera tan hermosa como los tonos que era capaz de alcanzar con su voz de mezzosoprano.

Esta cantante fue un ícono durante mi adolescencia y juventud, sobre todo luego de ver la película El Guardaespaldas, que protagonizó junto a Kevin Costner, y que a pesar de tener muchas escenas en las que ella cantaba sus hits, no resultaba un film que pudiera catalogar como musical.

Pero en "Quiero bailar con alguien" la vemos no como cantante o actriz, sino como la mujer detrás del ícono, quien tuvo que lidiar con la fama de su madre, las peleas entre sus padres, el escape que le ofrecía su hermano con drogas desde los 14 años y su búsqueda del amor que se le negaba en casa.

Dicen que un talento sin disciplina no se aprovecha, pero cuando la presión para lograr la excelencia pasa el umbral, las consecuencias pueden ser graves, y mucho más en un medio que se presta para los excesos como lo es el show bussiness.

Sin embargo, Whitney tuvo oportunidades de oro, desde el momento que fuera descubierta por quien fuera su manager y mentor desde los 19 años, en él encontró no solo una guía para su carrera, sino también un confidente.

La película presenta su realidad (conocida ya por la mayoría) con respecto al uso y abuso de sustancias, una relación errática con su esposo Bobbi Brown, y en cómo su hija vivió la misma realidad que ella tuvo desde niña, repitiendo el patrón de conducta conocido por ella, aunque en su caso, tuvo atenuantes que la llevaron a hundirse progresivamente.

Algo que me gustó del film es cómo no se amilana con los retos que se le presentaban, pues para ella ya era familiar el llevar las cosas al extremo, no solo lo malo, sino también su hermosa voz, la cual antecedía a todo lo que pasaba tras bambalinas con su vida personal.

Sin embargo, hay un punto álgido de todos sus excesos que terminó quebrando a la mujer detrás de la voz. Fue obligada a entrar a rehabilitación, no una sino muchas veces. Su espíritu luchaba por salir a flote, pero es ahí cuando vemos que el contexto si importa, pues la tensión con su padre y su ex pareja pesaban mucho más que sus ganas de sanar.

Houston tenía un gran peso sobre sus hombros, y acá rescato una frase que lo enmarca todo "cuando no tienes vacaciones, tienes que liberarte de alguna manera", con eso se cierra el círculo dramático de lo que tuvo que vivir esta actriz, quien en medio de la lucha, terminó perdiéndolo todo.

The film presents her reality (already known to most) regarding substance use and abuse, an erratic relationship with her husband Bobbi Brown, and how her daughter lived the same reality she had since childhood, repeating the pattern of behavior she knew, although in her case, there were mitigating factors that led her to progressively sink.

Something I liked about the film is how she does not shy away from the challenges she faced, as she was already familiar with taking things to the extreme, not only the bad, but also her beautiful voice, which preceded everything that was happening behind the scenes in her personal life.

However, there is a climax to all her excesses that ended up breaking the woman behind the voice. She was forced into rehab, not once but many times. Her spirit struggled to stay afloat, but that's when we see that context does matter, as the tension with her father and ex-partner weighed much more heavily than her desire to heal.

Houston had a heavy burden on her shoulders, and here I recall a phrase that sums it all up: “When you don't have a vacation, you have to free yourself somehow.” This closes the dramatic circle of what this actress had to go through, who in the midst of her struggle ended up losing everything.
