Lately, I've been setting myself challenges that I've found not only fun, but also an exercise in stepping outside my comfort zone. This one was quite daring, but enjoyable.
I was finishing a long tour of the city of Banfield (province of Buenos Aires) and, as I had no data, I thought I'd go into a McDonald's to use the Wi-Fi and have a drink, as I had no cash, only my virtual wallet. But when I got to the nearest one, it was packed with students who had just finished class, so it would have been crazy to try to get served with so many people around.
There is also the option of using the interactive screens to place your order, but there were four of them, each with a queue of up to three people, and I just wanted to buy a coffee to keep me going a little longer so I could get home for lunch. I was about to leave when I saw one of the salesmen who comes to my workplace drive into the drive-through, and I had a crazy idea that might work.
I can't say we're friends, but his face is familiar to me, just as mine is to him, so after waving to him and getting ready to leave, I signalled to him and he stopped. I approached him and said, ‘Could you help me buy a coffee from the drive-through?’ He looked at me as if I were crazy, but I explained and he signalled for me to get in the car. Yes, you should never get into a car with a stranger, but he wasn't entirely a stranger to me, as I had been seeing him once a week for six years arriving at my workplace.
There was no queue at the drive-through, so we got there quickly. He placed his order and I told him what I wanted and he added it. In the end, he paid for everything and I asked him for his alias so I could transfer him the money, but he said he would give it to me anyway, because, according to him, my mischief had made his day, as he would never have imagined such audacity on my part.
So after they dispatched the order, I thanked him and got out with my coffee and the bag of pastries. I went in through the door opposite where I had come out, found a table as far away from the counter as possible, and drank my coffee, laughing to myself at the crazy thing I had just done.
As I went on holiday around that time, I haven't seen him again, but I'm sure there will be a knowing smile when I see him on his weekly visit to my workplace.

7 commentsOh, I love your story! In an instant, you got free coffee and pastries. 😁
I like McCafe, especially the roast coffee. 😍
The idea was to avoid queuing inside the shop, but it turned out better than I’d expected.
¡Excelente!
