People often label me as proud because I don’t walk up to strangers or launch into long chats. The truth is simpler: I was raised to speak only when I have something worth saying, and that habit has stuck with me into adulthood. While I can greet a crowd a thousand times, sitting down for a deep conversation feels like stepping into unfamiliar territory so I avoid it, and the few friends I do have are the ones I feel truly comfortable with.

Why the Assumption Happens
Humans tend to fill gaps with the easiest explanation. When someone keeps their distance, pride becomes the default tag. I’ve noticed this pattern repeatedly, a church member colleague sees my quiet demeanor and assumes I’m aloof, or a new acquaintance interprets my hesitation as arrogance. In reality, the quiet comes from a cultural upbringing that values restraint and respect for others’ space.
How I Shows Up in Daily Life
*Greetings I’ll say Good morning without thinking, because it’s a habit.
*Small talk My mind goes blank when I try to ask How’s your day? in a genuine way.
*Friend circle I have two people apart for my siblings and husband I can be completely open with; beyond that, I stay on the periphery.

The Impact on Me
The label doesn’t bother me much, but it does create occasional friction. Sometimes I miss out on spontaneous group plans because people think I don’t want to join.Other times, I feel isolated even when I’m surrounded by people. Recognizing the source my upbringing, not my personality has been the first step toward change.

But have been trying to take small Steps like (Micro‑chat) I now aim for one meaningful line instead of a full story.

Greeting + prompt Pairing a hello with a question (Good morning! How’s that project coming along?) feels less pressured.

Shared activities, Joining a activities is what am trying to work on but seems difficult,most especially occasion stuff am still battling with that and I have full confirmation of that cos since January till now I attended just one occasion.

When I think of saying something, I count to five and go for it, cutting the overthinking loop.

I’m not proud I’m conditioned to be reserved. Understanding the root lets me keep the parts I like (calm, thoughtful interactions) while slowly expanding my comfort zone.
