I have always been someone who avoids passing judgment on others. I believe that people are imperfect and that everyone has their own reasons for doing what they do, no matter how silly it might seem or sound. We humans are complicated beings, so it's difficult for one to understand the kind of choices we make, so most times I try to approach most situations with understanding rather than criticism. However, there are times when people we kind of trust or admire disappoint us in ways we really cannot believe they could actually do that.

Henry is one of those people who shattered my perception of him. Before we became close and started talking, I had respected him from afar. He carried himself with such calm and composure, so this made me assume that he was sensible and mature. Somehow, we clicked and started talking.Through me, he got to know one of my younger siblings and expressed that he liked her. At the time, I genuinely thought he was serious and sincere, so I gave him my permission to ask her out, and I said if she agreed, they could date. Thank God she rejected him, he wasn't her type.

Somehow everything changed; out of nowhere, I started hearing different contrasting things about him, like how he is a chronic womanizer. The worst of it was how he bragged to the few people close to him about how some of those girls have had several abortions for him. The thought of how he behaves disgusted me to my core.

It took me time to reconcile that the Henry I thought I knew was also the same person I was hearing things about. What baffles me is that a lot of people know him to behave that way; he doesn't hide it. I think I was deceived by his calm nature and didn't see him for who he really is. I felt betrayed and disappointed, not because he owed me anything personally, but because I had always believed he was a decent person.

I tried talking to him about it on different occasions; he just shoved it off like it was nothing, so I started cutting off from him bit by bit. I didn't want to be close to someone I know changes when women like they are a piece of clothes, and he got the memo, so the only thing we do now is just greet each other whenever we see each other on the street.

This is a harsh reminder that most people are not always who they appear to be. Even though that wouldn't change me still believing in giving people the benefit of the doubt.
