At a small climate monitoring station, the team continues its work despite the fact that winter and a factor they have not been able to identify are killing life. It is one of the many stations that were installed in different regions of the planet in 2040, when the changes were irreversible.

Sato is a Japanese climatologist who joined the team a year ago.

"We should not go out in this storm, it is dangerous. We can wait until tomorrow for conditions to improve"

"You know very well, Sato, that it's not going to get better. Look at the instruments: temperatures between -35 and -15 °C. Winds in excess of 100 km/h. And on top of that, snowfall is expected tonight. And this was a rain forest just a year ago".

"All the more reason, Itis, not to do it!."

"And what are we going to tell the Director? That we have to wait until winter is over to go out and get the samples?"

"But Itis!, we haven't had communication with any of the stations for two weeks now. And we only get the weather data because it's computers and not people sending it"

Itis puts her hands on her head. She is Colombian. She is 30 years old, dark and thin. Her dark brown hair with lots of curls is tied up in a bun. She is the biologist in charge of this mission.

"We need to know what's going on! Some animals out there have survived when most species have become extinct. You know very well the importance of this research, to prevent humanity from disappearing. Have you been able to communicate with your family?"

On Sato's face, his slanted eyes narrowed even more and he pulled back his very short, straight black hair. He knows his family has little hope of survival.

"I have not been able to communicate with my wife for a week now. Japan and all of Southeast Asia are under a great blanket of clouds"

"We know something is killing, and it's not just the cold. In this region we have detected animal life. Why? We have to find out. ¡Sato prepares the expedition!. We leave in an hour"

The vehicle with the research team under Itis' command left the station. The view through the windows was very strange. The large trees, with their frozen branches, some vines, ferns and bromeliads hung like stalactites. The water of the rivers looked like mirrors. It was difficult to advance in this terrain.

Itis and Sato, accompanied by Ever, the peruvian photographer, and Carlos, the doctor, got out of the vehicle leaving Helena, brazilian and the communications specialist, inside.

A few years ago, Carlos was a connoisseur of much of this territory. Born in one of the native communities south of the Orinoco River, he had graduated as a doctor, although he combined this knowledge with shamanic medicine, his ancestral culture. But now everything had changed.

The frozen jungle fell silent as the four humans in their suits that protected them from the cold and any other potentially dangerous agents began to walk. I did not recognize them as part of it. I watched them move slowly, could sense their fears as they stopped at the river bank

"Look, something is moving under the ice". Itis was bent over, watching. "It's fish!"

Ever took several pictures.

Itis turned to look at Sato and Carlos, who were waiting for instructions.

"We have to get a sample. We have to break the ice"

Sato approached with a beak and a net to catch a fish. He crouched down next to Itis. When the tip of the pickaxe broke the ice, a scream echoed through the jungle.

"Try again Sato"

"Don't do it!, didn't you hear the scream?"

"I didn't hear anything, Carlos, did you?"

"Neither did we."

"I don't know what's going on, Itis, but we shouldn't go on. I heard a scream of pain"

"You're imagining things, Carlos, we're not going to continue anyway, the fish are gone."

They advanced a few steps and attached to a trunk, mimicking the light brown color of the peeling bark, was a butterfly with lacy wings. Eder hurried to photograph it.

"Quick, Sato! give me the mesh". And with agility, Itis managed to catch it. The butterfly tried to flutter away, but could not.

Then, a high-pitched scream was heard, and Carlos covered his ears with his hands.

"Let her go, my ears are going to burst."

"What's wrong with you, Carlo?" Eder approached to help him, but he went to where Itis was and snatched the netting, freeing the butterfly. Only then did he stop hearing the scream.

:You don't understand, we can't take anything from this jungle. We are hurting it."

Itis and Eder looked at Carlos as if he had lost his mind, but Sato believed that Carlos had the ability to communicate with the jungle and they did not.

Helena's frightened voice came over the radio.

"Go back!, something strange is approaching"

When they arrived, they found Helena outside the vehicle. It was covered by roots coming out of the ground, forming a mesh from which she could not escape. The vehicle was the trapped prey.

"What do we do now?" Eder asked while taking pictures.

"We have to look for shelter, there is going to be a storm tonight, and we have only a few hours of daylight left". Sato knew they had to hurry walking, soon the night would be very dark and cold.

Carlos approached to warn them. "In the jungle we are defenseless, we cannot attack her, she will defend herself. We have to walk to the south where the tepuis are. I know we are here to fulfill a mission, but now we have to survive."

"I don't believe what you say, Carlos, you talk about the jungle as if it were an organism with a mind of its own".

"And it is, Itis, you just haven't realized what is happening". Sato agreed with Carlos and complemented what he said. "Science does not explain everything. There is a deeper and more complex knowledge.
What good were science and technology if they didn't help us understand it?"

Itis was silent, and they all began to walk among the trunks and branches following Carlos along the course of the river, being careful not to stumble or touch the animals they began to see as it was getting dark. Only Eder took pictures because it didn't seem to bother him.

Night came very quickly and through the branches they could see the cloud cover approaching.

"We have to get there before the storm reaches us, we are already close, look at the tepui". And he pointed to the rocky mountain that rose in front of them. "There are some caves there." Carlos knew very well these flat plateaus that now had snow on top. They were still majestic. The oldest area on the planet.

They managed to reach some caves at the base of the tepui when the wind increased its speed and large hail began to fall.

Using their flashlights, they advanced to protect themselves from the wind. The cave ascended in a stretch of about a kilometer, and after a straight stretch there was a slope that they managed to descend.

"Do you know these caves, Carlos? How far can we go?"

"I've been through several stretches, but I haven't gone further than five kilometers. But look Itis, the drawings on the walls, they were made thousands of years ago by the ancient inhabitants of the planet. They lived here".

They all came here to observe figures of birds, deer, turtles, fish, jaguars, sloths and snakes.

And with them, men, women and children. They, too, had come from the jungle. Perhaps in a time of glaciations, these tepuis protected them.

They continued advancing and began to feel hot to such an extent that they decided to take off their suits. And at the end of one of the caverns they saw a light. And they stopped.

"What could be beyond it?" Hwondered, "Is it safe to move forward?"

"Behind there is nothing waiting for us, ahead there is hope, let's go on. Itis smiled at them to reassure them, and they all decided to continue."

And there they were in front of them, as they entered the next cavern, the natives of the jungle who knew from the stories of their ancestors what was going to happen and what they should do. They returned to the place that would protect them until the jungle accepted them back.

En una pequeña estación de monitoreo del clima,  el equipo continúa  con su trabajo a  pesar de que el invierno y un factor que no han podido identificar, están acabando con la vida.  Es una de  las muchas estaciones que  fueron  instaladas  en diferentes regiones del planeta  en el año 2040, cuando los cambios fueron irreversibles.

Sato es un experto climatólogo japones que fue incorporado al equipo hace un año.

—No debemos salir con esta tormenta, es peligroso. Podemos esperar hasta mañana que las condiciones mejoren.

—Sabes muy bien, Sato, que no va a mejorar. Mira los instrumentos: temperaturas entre -35 y -15 °C. Vientos de más de 100 km/h.  Y además, se espera que caiga una nevada esta noche. Tú mismo me lo has informado. Y esto era una selva tropical hace apenas un año.

—Con más razón, Itis,  ¡no debemos hacerlo!.

—¿Y qué le diremos al Director? ¿Qué hay que esperar a que pase el invierno para salir a buscar las muestras?

—¡Pero Itis! no hemos tenido comunicación con ninguna de las estaciones desde hace dos semanas. Y solo recibimos los datos climáticos porque son computadoras y no personas las que los envían.

Itis se pone las manos en la cabeza. Es colombiana. Tiene 30 años, morena y delgada. Su cabellera castaño oscuro con muchos rizos está sujeta en un moño. Es la bióloga al mando de esta misión.

—¡Necesitamos saber qué está ocurriendo! Algunos animales que están allá afuera, han sobrevivido cuando la mayoría de las especies se han extinguido. Tú sabes muy bien la importancia de esta investigación, evitar que la humanidad desaparezca.  ¿Te has podido comunicar con tu familia?

En el rostro de Sato, sus ojos oblicuos se entrecerraron aun mas y echo hacia atrás su cabello muy corto, negro y liso. Sabe que su familia tiene pocas esperanzas de sobrevivir.

—No me he podido comunicar con mi esposa desde hace una semana. Japón y todo el sudeste asiático están bajo un gran manto de nubes.

—Sabemos que hay algo que está matando y no es el frío solamente.  En esta  región hemos detectado vida animal. ¿Por qué? Tenemos que averiguarlo.  Sato prepara la expedición, saldremos en una hora.

El vehículo con el equipo de investigación al mando de Itis salió de la estación. La visión que tenían a través de las ventanas era muy extraña. Los grandes árboles, con sus ramas congeladas,  algunas lianas, helechos y bromelias colgaban como estalactitas. El agua de los ríos parecía espejos. Era difícil avanzar en este terreno.

Itis y Sato, acompañados de Ever el fotógrafo peruano, y Carlos, el médico, bajaron del vehículo dejando adentro a Helena, brasilera y especialista en comunicaciones.

Hace unos años, Carlos era un conocedor de gran parte de este territorio. Nacido en una de las comunidades nativas al sur del río Orinoco, se había graduado de médico, aunque combinaba estos conocimientos con la medicina chamánica, su cultura ancestral. Pero ahora todo había cambiado.

La selva congelada hizo silencio cuando los  cuatro humanos con sus trajes que los protegían del frío y de cualquier otro agente potencialmente peligroso comenzaron a andar. No los reconocía como parte de ella.  Los veía moverse lentamente, podía sentir sus miedos cuando se detuvieron a la orilla del río

—¡Miren!, algo se está moviendo bajo el hielo. —Itis estaba inclinada observando. —¡Son peces!

Ever tomó varias fotografías.

Itis se volteó a ver a Sato y Carlos, que esperaban instrucciones.

—¡Tenemos que agarrar una muestra. Hay que romper el hielo.

Sato se acercó  con un pico y una malla para atrapar a un pez. Se agachó al lado de Itis. Cuando la punta del pico rompió el hielo, un grito retumbó en la selva.

Vuelve a intentarlo Sato.

—No lo hagas, ¿no escucharon el grito?

—Yo no escuché nada, Carlos,  ¿y ustedes?

Sato y Eder se miraron. —Nosotros tampoco.

—No sé qué está pasando Itis, pero no deberíamos continuar. Yo escuché un grito de dolor.

—Estás imaginando cosas, Carlos, igual no vamos a continuar, los peces se fueron.

Avanzaron unos pasos y pegada a un tronco, mimetizada con el color marrón claro de la corteza desprendida, estaba una mariposa de alas de encaje. Eder se apresuró a fotografiarla.

—¡Rápido, Sato!, dame la malla. —Con agilidad, Itis logró atraparla. La mariposa trataba de escapar aleteando, pero no podía.

Entonces, se escuchó un grito agudo y Carlos se tapó los oídos con las manos.

—Suéltenla, se me van a reventar los oídos.

—¡Que te pasa, Carlos, cálmate!

Eder se acercó para ayudarlo, pero él se fue adonde estaba Itis y le arrebató la malla liberando a la mariposa. Solo así dejó de escuchar el grito.

—¡No entienden!, no podemos tomar nada de esta selva. Le estamos haciendo daño.

Itis y Eder veían a Carlos como si hubiera perdido la razón, pero Sato creía que Carlos tenía la capacidad de comunicarse con la selva y ellos no.

Por la radio se escuchó la voz asustada  de Helena.

—¡Regresen!, algo extraño se está acercando.

Al llegar, encontraron a Helena fuera del vehículo. Este estaba cubierto por las raíces que salían del suelo formando una malla de la cual no podía escapar. El vehículo era la presa atrapada.

—¿Y ahora qué hacemos? —Preguntó Eder mientras tomaba fotografías.

—Tenemos que buscar un refugio, va a haber una tormenta esta noche y nos queda pocas horas de luz. —Sato sabía que tenían que apurarse en caminar, pronto la noche sería muy oscura y fría.

Carlos se acercó para advertirles. 
—En la selva estamos indefensos, no podemos agredirla, pues ella se defenderá. Tenemos que caminar hacia el sur donde están los tepuyes.  Sé que estamos acá para cumplir una misión, pero ahora tenemos que sobrevivir.

—No creo en lo que dices, Carlos, hablas de la selva como si fuera un organismo con mente propia.

—¡Y lo es, Itis!, ¿es que no te has dado cuenta de lo que está pasando? Sato estaba de acuerdo con Carlos y complementó lo que dijo. —La ciencia no lo explica todo. Hay un conocimiento más profundo y complejo.  ¿De qué nos valieron la ciencia y la tecnología si no nos ayudaron a comprenderlo?

Itis se quedó en silencio y todos comenzaron a andar entre los troncos y ramas siguiendo a Carlos por el curso del río, teniendo cuidado de no tropezar ni tocar a los animales que empezaron a ver mientras oscurecía. Solo Eder tomaba fotografías porque eso no parecía incomodarle.

La noche llegó muy rápido y a través de las ramas podían ver la capa de nubes que se acercaba.

—Tenemos que llegar antes de que nos alcance la tormenta, ya estamos cerca, miren el tepuy. Y señalo a la montaña rocosa que se alzaba frente a ellos. Allí hay unas cuevas. —Carlos conocía muy bien estas mesetas planas que ahora tenían nieve en su cima. Seguían siendo majestuosas. La zona más antiguas del planeta.

Lograron llegar a unas cuevas en la base del tepuy  cuando el viento incrementaba su velocidad y comenzó a caer granizo de grandes proporciones.

Alumbrándose con las linternas avanzaron para protegerse del viento. La cueva ascendía en un tramo como de un kilómetro y luego de un tramo recto había una pendiente que lograron bajar.

—¿Conoces estas cuevas, Carlos? ¿Hasta dónde podemos llegar?

—He recorrido varios tramos, pero no he llegado más allá de cinco kilómetros. Pero, observa Itis. Los dibujos en las paredes, fueron hechos hace miles de años por los antiguos habitantes del planeta. Ellos vivieron acá.

Todos se acercaron a observar figuras de pájaros, venados, tortugas, peces,  jaguares, perezas y serpientes. Y junto a ellos, hombres, mujeres y niños.  Ellos también habían llegado  de la selva. Quizás en una época de glaciaciones, estos tepuyes los protegieron.

Siguieron avanzando y comenzaron a sentir calor hasta tal punto que decidieron quitarse los trajes. Y al final de una de las cavernas vieron una luz. Y se detuvieron.

—¿Qué habrá más allá? —Se preguntó Helena —¿Será seguro avanzar?

—Atrás no nos espera nada, adelante hay una esperanza, vamos a seguir.—Itis les sonrió para darles confianza y todos decidieron continuar.

Y allí estaban frente a ellos, al entrar en la siguiente caverna, los nativos de la selva que sabían por las historias de sus ancestros lo que iba a pasar y lo que debían hacer. Volvieron al lugar que los protegería hasta que la selva los aceptara de nuevo.
