I'm in Love With Sandy
Even though I've been in a lot of hip pain over the last three months, I've worked hard to strengthen them to the point I can ride a bike. I think as I'm moving my legs in one plane with no side to side pivoting, cycling is okay. Certainly the e-bike allows me to back off if I am feeling fatigued and whilst I ease into harder cycling, it allows me just to pedal with minimal effort, particuarly going up hills. I've read lots of stories and reviews about how older people who are less mobile got fit again using an e-bike, or at least gained some freedom they didn't have on the couch, getting them into some adventure they never thought possible. Given the rise in diesel prices - now AUD $2.70 (actually, since I drafted this a few days ago, it's nearly at $3 near us) at the pump - getting to the shops or beach on this will also be good for our wallet.
**She's already been given a human name - Sandy. Appropriate or what?**
We had two major rides on the weekend - one into the bush gravel tracks behind Anglesea, and the other to Point Roadknight, where we swim every morning, plus a drunken double dink (what do you call it) for Jamie to pick up a bike frame from the other side of town, which was hilarious. I'm not sure the bike SHOULD have carried two of us, and the hills were a struggle, but down hill holding onto Jamie at 40kmph was a hoot.
We are so spoilt for choice in this town. To get to the beach on Sunday, we avoided the roads, and went along the river and then the dirt track down to the sea. I mean, these views, am I right?
A bit of mixed terrain - gravel, sandy tracks, asphalt and concrete and grass, all of which she handled well, as well as a few meaty uphills. Jamie's sure getting fit pedalling behind me!
There was a really big swell as well, so a lot of people had got to this beach because it was right for the size and their ability. I definitely preferred to cycle over surf (I know, right, big call!) because it was so crowded.
The views were just gorgeous. I can't even explain the beauty of this place. We took the back gravel route to another beach and looked at the waves for a while. It's a track I've never gone down - Sandy sure is going to take me to new places!
We also road down a couple of side streets that are no through roads for cars, and saw some pretty gorgeous houses. I'd need another million or two to move to that side of town! Still, there's definitely a downside to moving that close to the sea - house maintenance and rust on the cars for one! Being in a sheltered spot a km and a half a way as the crow flies is fine by me.
Here's Jamie striking a pose. For extra fitness, he ran to the bottom of the stairs and back. Poor boy was knackered by the end of the weekend.
In the distance we could see the lighthouse at Airey's Inlet - this taken with 5x camera zoom. The grandson is looking forward to going up in it because he's not allowed til he is 5.
Honestly, I had so much fun on this bike. In the morning Jamie was off to work and told me to take a break from riding as it was going to rain. He went to work, and I jumped on Sandy to go down the beach - yep, I'm a rebel. I had a beautiful swim and then headed back as the skies opened up. I went back via a huge hill to see if she'd do it, which she did. I got very wet and had so wipe her down and re-oil her chain.
When I went to physio, he told me to ride every second or third day, so I don't send my hip backwards. I suppose I should listen - I don't want to be couch rideen again! I'm one to get carried away I suppose, but I'm also a lot better at listening to advice too. I've been given a lot harder exercises to strengthen my hip and I'm feeling so hopeful that between some 'sensible' cycling, some limited surfs, and the exercises, I'll be having adventures on the bike for many years to come.
With Love,

I'm so glad you've found something you enjoy and that will actually help strengthen the hips! Bonus: you can do it with Jamie! And Sandy is the perfect name!
Isn't it!? I didn't mean to name her, I never named a bike before, but I love her so much it seemed natural. I had to laugh, I ducked down the mobile library last night to return books and it was raining... When I put her in the shed I towelled her dry and put a blanket on her to keep her warm. What an idiot. But I do feel quite the affection for the thing!
Now that is funny!
We got over taken in Canberra by an e bike while we were doing 70 km/h and he on one wheel doing a mono !LOL
Amazing what unemployed politicians can get up to!
Hahaha that's quite the image.....
Jealous much??? Hahaha. I doubt I'll be popping anything... The bike weighs 28 kg!!
I really might look into one of these. It sounds like something that really might help me out alot. Plus, even if I did pass out while riding, II'd have a helmet. And I wouldn't go all that fast...lol
You all are so blessed to live where you love it. I bet watching you guys ride down that hill together was a hoot. Hope your week is going well and so glad your hip is doing better.
Oh Joe I think you'd love it. It really does make it easy. I see a lot of the old crew here on ebikes (not that you're old lol). And because it's pedal assist, you do have to do SOMETHING but it's great as you move your joints which we need to do!
What was the make and model of the one you bought?
It's an NCM T7S step through. I have heard good things about the Moscow too but wanted to ride mre upright. The good thing about these is they have a torque sensor instead of a cadence sensor. You'll prob find you have a heap of different bikes there. I've heard good things about the Aventon too.
Thank you. I will start looking into them. May have to wait a bit. Tons of medical bills from her surgeries coming in now.
😍

Good to see you're enjoying your new bicycle that much. And being able to go to the beach by bike is a privilege... and I know that because I live 20 minutes from the sea too.
Do be careful with those 'sandy' conditions. Sand and grease are a bad combination for chains and gears. They can wear out quickly. And the salty from the ocean can cause corrosion.
I don't want to scare you, but check up and rinse your chain every now and then to make it last a bit longer.
Or else you might spend the money you save from not having to fill up the car on bicycle maintenance 😉
Ha I'm married to a bike obsessive. We have a compressor and he blows off the sand and gets his little thing of oil out and oils the chain. Mind you I don't take it right on the beach. Here it's parked on the concrete boat ramp at the motor yacht club X
You don't have to ride it on the sand to have sand all over it. A bit of wind and you have a sandy Sandy 😂
You're lucky with a bicycle obsessive husband 😉
Yes it's my personal bike mechanic! But I'll make sure she's looked after don't worry.

Is the grandson gonna read Van Der Meer as a primer to the lighthouse?
Ha! Maybe. His father read the Hobbit at six so that's quite the challenge.
Listen to your physio, they know best. 🤓 And here my rebellious spirit would add… but don’t stop listening to your heart!
Don’t doubt it.
One day I heard a man who has cycled all around the world say that the bicycle is a very human means of transport: you move at a pace set by your body, you feel the breeze, people greet you, you pass through any place and you have time to enjoy life up close — nature, I mean… and water tastes like glory. Drinking water is very important.
(Of course, I absolutely agree with him! I enjoy cycling far more than going by car)
;)
I had friends cycle the length of south america and would so love to do something like that..but where would I charge the battery?? He he. I agree. It's such a nice way to see the world even if it's just your neighbourhood....
Cool new bike! I like the color - and the name suits it.
A few days ago I was watching a short clip about what is the most efficient mode of traveling. The graph measured the amount of distance traveled vs. the energy required. and in the graph they put all kinds of animals (fish, birds, cheetah, human), as well as technological modes, such as car, train, helicopter, etc.
It turns out that a human of bike is the most efficient land traveler (energy used vs. distance covered)
Hey well that doesn't suprise me! We watch a few bike packing youtubers that travel vast distances on them. All they need is a tent, a small burner and a bit of food and water and they can easily last a week and cover some distance! Oh and water. I always think if there was an efficient way to charge my ebike I'd go on a bike packing adventure with it... But I suppose I could just pedal without a motor lmao. The bicycle was probably man's best invention!!!!
I wonder if you can find a folding solar charger that you can adopt for your bike. Or even a small portable wind turbine so it can charge over night.
Also this kinda adds to the weight but your bike cant be without - tire repair kit and a pump.
This is THE BEST reason for getting an E-Bike, really cool that with it, you're able to still have an active life. Be sure to work on strengthening those muscles around your hips 👍
Also really cool the cycling community is getting more active, so thanks for helping in that 😊
Sounds like Sandy is getting a good workout during her "breaking-in" period! I am so happy that you're now just a short bike ride from your beloved ocean! 😊
