The cruel prince, honest review
Fantasy is a genre I've been looking forward to for a long time, especially because of the awesome fanarts I often see on Pinterest. So much visual beauty could only originate in worlds completely different from the real one, and that intrigued me to no end. That's how I came to The Cruel Prince by Holly Black, a read that had been recommended to me quite a bit... and one that I certainly don't regret starting.
In this story we follow Jude, a human who, due to a murder and a series of family betrayals, ends up living in the fairy world, Elfhame, along with her twin sister Taryn. Both are left in the care of their stepfather Madoc, who turns out to be the great general of that feeric kingdom. From the beginning, Jude has to learn to survive among magical creatures who despise her for being human, even though she is part of the aristocracy because of her upbringing.
One of the main conflicts revolves around Prince Cardan, one of the king's sons, who takes a particular dislike to Jude. What begins as a relationship marked by tension and contempt gradually evolves... though not necessarily towards love at first. Cardan is a complex character: I thought I would love him from his first appearance, but he turns out to have rather questionable attitudes. Still, I can't deny that some of his interactions with Jude got me. I hope this is just the Enemies phase of the story, and that we'll get to the long-awaited Lovers later on, hehehe.
This book masterfully combines fantasy with political intrigue. It has unexpected twists, broken alliances, betrayals and difficult decisions. I enjoyed it so much that I finished it in four days, just when I had no career assignments and needed a break. The narrative is snappy, though there are chapters that are more exciting than others. Especially when the plot twists come, one is left thinking: *What's going to happen now?!
I loved Jude as the main character. She is not perfect, but she is strong, determined and courageous. She doesn't let herself be easily defeated and doesn't hesitate to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals. It seems to me that she is one of those characters that mark, of those that are not easily forgotten.
I know it's a trilogy, and if this first book was this good, my expectations for the next ones are through the roof. I wouldn't be surprised if The Cruel Prince eventually becomes a classic of young adult fantasy, a reference for future works in the genre.
SourceEsa es mi opinión sincera. ¿Y ustedes? ¿Ya lo leyeron? ¿Qué les pareció esta historia?
That's my honest opinion. Have you read it yet? What did you think of this story?
