Vaya que me ha impactado el tema con el cual nos abre la semana nuestro querido @emiliorios, porque además del Síndrome de la Silla Vacía, las balas perdidas en mi techo, dos perdidas familiares muy queridas en fechas cercanas a la navidad, asistir a la emergencia con un dolor de pecho y a la final es indigestión por tanta comida y preparar una guarida en mi closet para que las mascotas no sufran un infarto por los fuegos artificiales, no se que más pueda presentarse en mis recuerdos por estas fechas.

Todo el mundo tiene historias que contar en las fechas navideñas algunas muy alegres y otras en donde descubrimos que tuvimos mucha suerte y que hay por allí personas muy imprudentes. En dos ocasiones en mi hogar en una parte de mi casa que tiene techo de lamina y techo raso entraron dos balas perdidas.

La primera ocasión habíamos salido a casa de mi suegra a celebrar la noche vieja y cuando regresamos miramos que el techo raso había un agujero. Buscamos la bala causante por todos los espacios pero no la encontramos esa noche. Yo agradecí que nosotros no estuviéramos allí con los niños. A la mañana siguiente estaba guardando los platos que estaban secándose boca abajo y allí debajo de todo y sin haber roto ninguno estaba la bala. Escribí una nota al periódico local contando mi experiencia y pidiéndoles a los que tenían armas que no las dispararan, todo lo que sube suele bajar y con fuerza.

La segunda ocasión preparaba perros calientes con mis hijos y sus amigos cuando mi hijo menor se quejo y sujeto su brazo y un plato cayo al suelo. Miramos arriba, buscamos abajo y allí estaba la bala. Llame a la policía, pero no vinieron, tome mi carro y la bala, fui a poner la queja a la policía. No había forma de saber de donde vino.

Volví agradecer a la vida que solo fue un roce y que todos estábamos bien. Recordé que un tío político estando en un balcón en Caracas celebrando la navidad recibió un balazo en la cabeza y falleció. De verdad uno nunca sabe cuando le puede tocar esta forma de morir tan inesperada.

El Síndrome de la Silla Vacía se vuelve cada año más notoria, pero no directamente en un hogar especifico, mi calle se volvía un notorio bullicio cuando daban las doce el 31, jóvenes y no tan jóvenes con maletas caminando de un lado a otro de la calle, gente poniéndose un billete de dólar dentro del zapato. Allí es cuando noto ese vació en mi calle, ya no están los que venían a dar el feliz año o que miraban extasiados el espectáculo de fuegos artificiales.

En mi familia no teníamos ningún pariente fallecido en el mes de diciembre, aquello parecía un récord y en el año 2013 tuvimos dos por cáncer. Mi hermana mayor y una prima muy cercana. Regresábamos del funeral de mi hermana con un gentío dentro de la casa, sin ganas de cocinar y sin tener nada preparado de comida por las complicaciones de la enfermedad, cuando recibí una llamada de un local cercano donde compraba pollo a la broster (frito) me había ganado dos combos de pollo. Y pude alimentar a los parientes. De esas cosas extrañas que solo a mi me suceden.

En una navidad mi exmarido fue llevado a emergencia creía que tenia un infarto, mi hija me pidió que la llevara, a la final fue solo indigestión por tanta comida por las fiestas. Pero lo que me sorprendió fue la cantidad de personas que había en la emergencia, muy bien vestidos y que seguramente no fue solo una indigestión nada más a lo que venían, pero es bastante común que suceda en estas fechas.

Al igual que los accidentes de tráfico, es bastante común que las madres le piden a sus hijos no salir a esas horas, sino quedarse en una casa porque hay mucho "loco" borracho por las calles. Es necesario tomar mucha precaución a la hora de manejar de madrugada en estas fechas.

Y para cerrar yo tenía una mascota que no le tenia miedo a los fuegos artificiales, no temblaba al escucharlos, pero ahora la mascota de mi hijo se pone muy nerviosa cuando escucha algún cohete, su sitio de protección esta en mi closet, allí busca protegerse. Pero yo nunca había visto a un perro temblar tanto y eso es muy peligroso para su corazón.

Wow, I've been really struck by the topic our dear @emiliorios has opened the week with, because in addition to the Empty Chair Syndrome, stray bullets in my ceiling, two very dear family losses close to Christmas, going to the emergency room with chest pain that turned out to be indigestion from eating so much, and preparing a den in my closet so the pets don't suffer a heart attack from the fireworks, I don't know what else could possibly come to mind around this time of year.

Everyone has stories to tell during the Christmas season, some very joyful and others where we discover how lucky we were and how reckless some people are. On two occasions, two stray bullets entered my home, specifically a section with a corrugated metal roof and a false ceiling.

The first time, we had gone to my mother-in-law's to celebrate New Year's Eve, and when we returned, we noticed a hole in the false ceiling. We searched everywhere for the bullet that caused it, but we couldn't find it that night. I was grateful that we weren't there with the children. The next morning, I was putting away the dishes that had been drying upside down, and there, underneath them all, without having broken a single one, was the bullet. I wrote a note to the local newspaper recounting my experience and asking those who owned guns not to fire them; what goes up must come down, and with force.

The second time, I was making hot dogs with my kids and their friends when my youngest son complained and grabbed his arm, and a plate fell to the floor. We looked up, looked down, and there was the bullet. I called the police, but they didn't come. I took my car and the bullet and went to file a report with the police. There was no way to know where it came from.

I was grateful again that it was just a graze and that we were all okay. I remembered that an uncle by marriage, while on a balcony in Caracas celebrating Christmas, was shot in the head and died. You truly never know when you might die in such an unexpected way.

The Empty Chair Syndrome becomes more noticeable every year, but not directly in any one specific household. My street used to be buzzing with activity at midnight on December 31st, young and old alike walking back and forth with suitcases, people stuffing dollar bills into their shoes. That's when I noticed the emptiness on my street; those who used to come and wish everyone a happy new year or watch the fireworks in awe were gone.

In my family, we hadn't had any relatives die in December; that seemed like a record. Then in 2013, we lost two to cancer: my older sister and a very close cousin. We were returning from my sister's funeral to a crowded house, with no desire to cook and no food prepared due to the complications of the illness, when I received a call from a nearby place where I bought broasted chicken. I had won two chicken combos. And I was able to feed my relatives. One of those strange things that only happen to me.

One Christmas, my ex-husband was taken to the emergency room; they thought he was having a heart attack. My daughter asked me to take her, but in the end, it was just indigestion from overeating during the holidays. What surprised me, though, was the number of people in the ER, all very well-dressed, and it was clear they were there for more than just indigestion. But it's quite common for that to happen around this time of year.

Just like with traffic accidents, it's quite common for mothers to tell their children not to go out at those hours, but to stay home because there are a lot of drunk drivers on the streets. It's necessary to be very careful when driving in the early morning hours at this time of year.

And to wrap things up, I used to have a pet that wasn't afraid of fireworks; it didn't tremble when it heard them. But now my son's pet gets very nervous when it hears a firework. Its safe haven is in my closet; that's where it seeks refuge. But I've never seen a dog tremble so much, and that's very dangerous for its heart.
