Unforgettable night
Is there even life without occurrences and events, whether good or bad? Life is all about things happening, both the ones we like and the ones we don’t, and that’s what makes life interesting.
I want to share one of the unforgettable events I have experienced in my life.
I can vividly remember how everything played out. It was in the evening, and we were seated in the compound after dinner. Our house is not far from the main road of the village, and while seated, we heard people shouting and saw others running past us with speed through the compound, heading for their escape route, followed by policemen with guns. Our compound wasn't fenced, so the soldiers ran through it in pursuit of the people they were chasing. We were terrified by the manner in which the whole event unfolded. Just as we were trying to regain our composure, the policemen dragged in our cousin, Ezekiel who lives with us, from the backyard.
"What’s happening? He’s not among them!" my mom began to shout amidst tears.
My dad held Ezekiel by the hand to stop the police from taking him away, but they were not giving any listening ears to what we were saying.
Ezekiel had been with us, he had only gone to the backyard to urinate. When the soldiers ran to the backyard, they assumed he was one of the people they were chasing, and that’s how they picked him up.
We kept dragging and resisting. Neighbours and everyone around gathered, but the police still refused to let him go.
The only option left was to follow them to the police station to settle the matter. My dad dressed up, and with the angry men who supported the release of Ezekiel, he followed them to the police station.
Fortunately, Ezekiel was released that night around 1 a.m. According to what my dad and everyone that went with him said, they insisted they would not leave until Ezekiel was released because he did nothing wrong. When the agitation became very intense, the police had no choice but to calm down and carefully examine the situation. He was then released. According to the police, they were pursuing boys who were smoking Indian hemp.
That night was very frightening for us because, what if it had been a more serious case, and Ezekiel had been killed in the process, especially considering how soldiers often react without thinking twice?
It’s an unforgettable night for me.
A sleepless night.
Thanks!
