Vor 27 Jahren, am 24. März 1999, hat die USA mit Europäischen NATO-Partnern drei Monate lang Serbien und Montenegro bombardiert.

Der offizielle Grund der Bombardierung war, ethnische Säuberungen im Kosovo und Bosnien zu verhindern.

Inoffiziell ging es aber so wie bei allen Kriegen um Machtprojektion, Einflussphären und auch Regime Change.

Das Ziel war nicht nur US-verbündete Albaner, die Mehrheitsbevölkerung im Kosovo, zu unterstützen, sondern auch Serbien durch einen Krieg politisch näher an die EU und USA heranzuführen, was im Angesicht der Bombardierungen irgendwie paradox erscheint, aber durchaus ein Ziel sein kann.

Im Laufe der Luftoffensive wurde auch die zivile Stromversorgung von Serbien angegriffen, und über Zehntausend Bomben über Serbien abgeworfen, die teilweise auch mit Depleted Uranium (DU) angereichert waren. Laut Wikipedia wurde dabei der Boden mit bis zu 11 Tonnen Depleted Uranium verseucht.

Laut NATO-Angaben der kriegsführenden Partei wurden dabei etwa 1000 Sicherheitsbeamte und 500 Zivilsten getötet. Hunderttausende Menschen sind als Folge des Kriegs und Zerfalls Jugoslawiens in die EU geflüchtet.

Der damalige Präsident Slobodan Milošević hat den Krieg überlebt, wurde aber etwa eineinhalb Jahre später Ende 2000 nach dem Vorwurf von manipulierten Wahlen abgewählt.

Der Krieg endete mit der Stationierung von KFOR-Soldaten im Kosovo, was manche auch als Okkupation wahrnehmen. Bis heute ist die Kosovo-Frage ungeklärt, die Unabhängigkeit nicht offiziell von Serbien anerkannt.

Bis heute sind die Folgen des Kriegs noch deutlich spürbar.

Twenty-seven years ago, on March 24th, 1999, the United States, together with its European NATO partners, bombed Serbia and Montenegro, another country in Europe, for three months.

The official reason for the bombing was to prevent ethnic cleansing in Kosovo and Bosnia.

Unofficially, however, as with all wars, like always it was about projecting power, spheres of influence, and regime change.

The goal was not only to support the US-allied Albanians, the majority population in Kosovo, but also to bring Serbia politically closer to the EU and the US through war—which seems somewhat paradoxical in light of the bombings, but can certainly be a goal.

During the air campaign, Serbia’s civilian power grid was also attacked, and over ten thousand bombs were dropped on Serbia, some of which were enriched with depleted uranium (DU). According to Wikipedia, the ground was contaminated with up to 11 tons of depleted uranium.

According to NATO figures provided by the belligerent party, approximately 1,000 security personnel and 500 civilians were killed. Hundreds of thousands of people fled to the EU as a result of the war and the breakup of Yugoslavia.

Then-President Slobodan Milošević survived the war but was voted out of office about a year and a half later, in late 2000, following allegations of election fraud.

The war ended with the deployment of KFOR troops in Kosovo, which some still perceive as an occupation. To this day, the Kosovo issue remains unresolved, and its independence has not been officially recognized by Serbia.

To this day, the consequences of the war are still felt.
