Discovering a species of solanaceae_Native plant || Planta nativa_Descubriendo una especie de la familia solanaceae

Would you believe me if I told you that there is a plant very similar to Rocoto (Capsicum pubescens), but that it is not pungent?. Yes, I harvested this fruit a few days ago. At first, I thought it was Aguaymanto (Physalis peruviana) or Potato (Solanum tuberosum). This was because I live on the coast of Peru and it is summer. Also, because of the type of flower, leaves, and fruit size (0.98 in).
When the plant was small (about 7.87 in), I thought it was an Aguaymanto because of the shape and color of its purple flowers, and its bush like structure. Then it began to branch out and its leaves were smooth, resembling the improved potatoes grown on the coast. Such as the varieties: Única, Yungay, Canchán, among others.
An important point is that at that moment I wasn't so interested in knowing what kind of plant it was, but rather in keeping it alive so I could harvest its fruit. This is because the soil was in the process of recovery and every plant was welcome, jaja.
Genetic diversity within the same plant
My expertise in botany is acceptable, I believe. When I looked closely at the flowers of this plant, I knew it wasn't Aguaymanto. I know that Aguaymanto has variable flowers and a small number of petals (5, 6, or 7). I also remembered that Aguaymanto has pubescent leaves (with soft hairs).
I was very happy to see this flower with 8 petals. And I thought it might be a native (wild) plant. At that moment, I took advantage of the opportunity to take pictures of the little plant, because I knew deep down that it would be unique... At least at home, jaja.
And that's not all, when I saw that another of its flowers had 6 petals, I loved it even more. I couldn't believe that the same plant had flowers with 6, 7, and 8 petals. The most abundant were the 7 petaled ones.
When it was in the bud stage, I removed the buds (manual removal of flowers). I do this to reduce the number of flowers and ensure that it reaches fruiting and harvest.
When I saw its fruit, I thought again that it was an improved potato, but I also thought it could be a wild tomato. So, I dug up the roots to see if it had already tuberized and harvest the little potatoes. I found a fasciculated root, discarding the idea of harvesting potatoes, jaja. I had to wait for the aerial fruit to ripen and then harvest it.
After a few days, the fruit turned red. At first look, it was between: tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and litlle rocoto (Capsicum pubescens). When we tried it in a salad, I knew it was a Solanaceae. It tasted like a bell pepper (Capsicum annuum) because it wasn't spicy, the seeds were similar to rocoto peppers (Capsicum pubescens), and it was the size of an aguaymanto (0.98 in).
To write this post, I found these materials among my university notes (maybe it's a coincidence, jaja): “Morphological descriptors” and a poster of “Native peppers of Peru.” There he says that we have more than 300 varieties of chili peppers in Peru, which may be the country with the greatest diversity.
In 2000, a study of the karyotype number of the rocoto pepper (Capsicum pubescens) found that 97% of samples had a chromosome number of 2n = 24. This means that this native rocoto pepper is likely to be rare or forgotten.
Reviewing the rocoto germplasm catalog compiled by INIA (National Institute for Agricultural Innovation) (2022), I found some similar ones (PER007170 and PER007176 from Huánuco, Peru). The difference lies in the level of pungency (spiciness), as these are very highly pungent compared to the one I found, which is not spicy at all (low pungency). Another difference is the size of the fruit, as the one I have is 2.5 cm (0.98 in).
Although its size is closer to PER007182 (Huánuco, Peru), it is still highly pungent. I chose this alternative because it has three septa (locules) and is small (3 cm), both characteristics similar to the sweet rocoto I showed you.
Peru is the country with the greatest diversity of cultivated chili peppers in the world (Capsicum Project Vegetable Program, 2012). I am happy to find a rocoto that is not spicy. I have the seeds and want to propagate it to continue learning about this native plant.

¿Me creerás si te digo que existe una planta muy similar al Rocoto (Capsicum pubescens), pero que este no pica?. Sí, hace unos días coseché este fruto. Al inicio creía que era Aguaymanto (Physalis peruviana) o Papa (Solanum tuberosum). Esto fue debido a que vivo en la Costa del Perú y estamos en época de verano. También, por el tipo de flor, hojas y tamaño del fruto 2.5 cm.
Cuando la planta estaba pequeña (unos 20 cm de altura), creía que era un Aguaymanto por las formas y colores de sus flores moradas y su estructura tipo arbusto. Luego empezó a ramificarse y sus hojas eran lisas, se parecían a las papas mejoradas que se cultivan en la Costa. Como las variedades: Única, Yungay, Canchán, entre otros.
Un dato importante es que en este momento no tenía tanto interés en qué planta sería, sino en que siguiera viva para cosechar sus frutos. Esto es porque el suelo estaba en proceso de recuperación y toda planta era bienvenida, jaja.
Diversidad genética en la misma planta
Mis conocimientos en botánica son aceptables, creo. Cuando ví detenidamente las flores de esta planta, supe que no se trataba de Aguaymanto. Sé que Aguaymanto tiene flores variables y su número de pétalos es pequeño (5, 6 ó 7). Además, recordé que Aguaymanto tiene hojas pubescentes (con pelitos blanditos).
Me alegró bastante ver esta flor de 8 pétalos. Y surgió la idea de que fuese una planta nativa (silvestre). En este momento aproveché tomarle fotos a la plantita, porque sabía en el fondo que sería única... Al menos en casa, jaja.
Y eso no es todo, cuando ví que otra de sus flores tenía 6 pétalos, la amé aún más. No podía creer que una misma planta tuviese flores de 6, 7 y 8 pétalos. Las más abundantes fueron las de 7 pétalos.
Cuando estaba en etapa de botón floral, hice el desbotonado (eliminación manual de flores). Esto lo hago para reducir el número de flores y asegurar que llegue a su frutificación y cosechar.
Al ver su fruto, volví a pensar que se trataba de una papa mejorada, también pensé que podía tratarse de un tomate silvestre. Entonces, escarbé sus raíces para ver si ya había tuberizado y cosechar las papitas. Encontré una raíz fasciculada, descartando la idea de cosechar papitas, jaja. Tocaba esperar a que pinte el fruto aéreo y cosechar.
Luego de unos días, el fruto pintó a color rojo. A simple vista estaba entre: tomate (Solanum lycopersicum) y rocotito (Capsicum pubescens). Cuando lo probamos en la ensalada, supe que era una Solanaceae, tenía el sabor a un pimentón (Capsicum annuum) porque no picaba, las pepas similares al rocoto (Capsicum pubescens), y el tamaño del aguaymanto (2.5 cm).
Para escribir esta publicación, encontré entre mis anotes de la Universidad (puede que sea coincidencia, jaja) estos materiales: "Descriptores morfológicos" y un afiche de "Ajíes nativos del Perú". Allí nos dice que tenemos mas de 300 variedades de ajíes en el Perú, pudiendo ser el país con mayor diversidad.
En el año 2000, un estudio del número cariotípico del rocoto (Capsicum pubescens) halló que el 97% de las muestras tienen un número cromosómico de 2n = 24. Eso quiere decir que hay probabilidades que este rocoto nativo sea poco frecuente u olvidado.
Revisando el Catálogo de rocoto de germoplasma del INIA (Instituto Nacional de Innovación Agraria) (2022), encontré algunos similares (PER007170 y PER007176 de Huánuco, Perú). La diferencia está en el grado de pungencia (picante), siendo estas muy altamente pungente, comparado con el que encontré, el cual no picada nada (baja pungencia); y otra diferencia es el tamaño del fruto, ya que el que tengo es de 2.5 cm (pequeño).
Aunque por el tamaño se acerca mas al PER007182 (Huánuco, Perú), pero sigue siendo altamente pungente. Opté por esta alternativa porque tiene 3 septos (lóculos) y es pequeña 3 cm, ambas características similares al rocoto dulce que les mostré.
Siendo el Perú un país con la mayor diversidad de ajíes cultivados en el mundo (Proyecto Capsicum Programa de hortalizas, 2012). Me alegra encontrar un rocoto que no pica. Tengo las semillas y quiero propagarlo para seguir conociendo esta planta nativa.
