Some people have a whole ritual when it comes to making decisions: they make a list of pros and cons, talk to three different friends, check their horoscope, the position of the stars, meditate, dream about the answer. Not me.

I mean… I try to do that these days.
Lies. hahaha

The truth is, for a long time, my decision-making process was kind of… impulsive. A mix of intuition, desperation, poorly channeled courage, and a touch of “eh, I’ll deal with it later.”

It’s not exactly pretty to admit that, I know. There’s a kind of wild romanticism in acting on impulse. And yes, sometimes it works — but it definitely comes with a price. I’ve made decisions that changed my entire life in the blink of an eye, without really thinking about the consequences. And the worst part is that, even though I know this, I still feel that urgency to solve everything now. Like time is constantly slipping through my fingers and I need to cling to the first answer that shows up.

As I wrote that last paragraph, it suddenly made sense — the song “A Urgência” by Dead Fish popped into my head. I actually have a tattoo of a line from it that says: “aceite as consequências do que acha que te faz melhor” (“accept the consequences of what you believe is best for you”).

But back to the point — I’ve been trying to work on this impulsiveness.

Lately, I started noticing how my impulsive choices were leading me to places I didn’t even know if I wanted to be. It felt like I was following a path designed by someone else, without even realizing it — and I don’t even like trails, lol. I decided I needed to learn how to pause. Not to the point of paralysis, but just enough to hear my own thoughts without the noise of the world. And most importantly, without the noise of fear.

Because, let’s be honest, a lot of bad decisions are born from fear. Fear of losing, fear of staying, fear of not being enough. Fear of standing still while the world seems to rush past. I’ve made choices out of fear of regretting them later — which is a cruel paradox: regretting something just because you were afraid of regretting the other thing. But we do it. That’s why now, when I feel like I’m about to make a big decision, I try to figure out whether I’m being led by fear or by desire. Whether I’m running from something or towards something.

Another thing I’ve been trying to pay attention to is outside voices. Sometimes, without realizing it, we make decisions looking for approval. Hoping for applause. Or just trying to silence someone’s critical voice. Spoiler: that kind of motivation never holds up when things get tough.

I’m still kind of chaotic. I still catch myself diving headfirst into situations with no map or lifejacket. But when I can, I try to look at the context like a chessboard. Visualize the pieces. Ask myself: if I go this way, what could happen? And if everything goes wrong? Can I handle it? Will I grow from it? Because there’s no way to guarantee that everything will work out — and I’ve stopped expecting that from myself. But I can try to choose paths that, even if they fail, still lead me somewhere meaningful.

I’ve also been learning to talk to myself. Sounds obvious, but it’s not. I used to make choices without truly checking in with me. I’d just go with the flow. Now, I ask myself what I really want. What I’m trying to avoid. It’s a practice. Sometimes the answer comes. Sometimes, all I get is silence.

At the end of the day, I’m still made of instinct — but now, with a dose of awareness. I still mess up, of course. But I’ve been trying to turn my decisions into bridges, not sinkholes. And if I’m going to make a mistake, let it be in the name of staying true to what I feel — not to what others expect from me.

Tem gente que faz um ritual na hora de tomar decisões, com lista de prós e contras, conversa com três amigos diferentes, consulta o horóscopo, a posição dos astros, medita, sonha com a resposta. Eu não.

Quer dizer… eu tento fazer isso hoje em dia. Mentira. hahaha

Mas, na real, durante muito tempo, minha tomada de decisão era meio… impulsiva. Uma mistura de intuição, desespero, coragem mal canalizada e uma pontinha de “ah, depois eu vejo no que dá”.

Não é bonito falar isso, eu sei. Tem um romantismo meio doido em agir por impulso. Sim, às vezes dá certo — mas também tem um preço. Eu já fiz escolhas que mudaram minha vida inteira num piscar de olhos, sem pensar direito nas consequências. Só que o pior é que, por mais que eu saiba disso, eu ainda sinto essa urgência de resolver tudo agora. Como se o tempo estivesse sempre me escorrendo pelos dedos e eu precisasse me agarrar à primeira resposta que surge.

Escrevendo esse último parágrafo, fez toda lógica a música 'A Urgência' do Dead Fish, que eu, inclusive, tenho um trecho tatuado que diz: 'aceite as consequências do que acha que te faz melhor'.

Mas, voltando ao assunto, tenho tentado mudar isso da impulsividade.

Nos últimos tempos, comecei a perceber que minhas decisões impulsivas estavam me levando para lugares que eu nem sabia se queria estar. Era como se eu estivesse seguindo uma trilha feita por outra pessoa, sem nem perceber - e eu nem gosto de trilha rs. Decidi que precisava aprender a pausar. Não a ponto de paralisar, mas o suficiente para ouvir minha própria cabeça sem o ruído do mundo. E, principalmente, sem o ruído do medo.

Porque, cá entre nós, muita decisão errada nasce do medo. Medo de perder, medo de ficar, medo de não ser suficiente. Medo de estar parada quando o mundo parece correr. Já fiz escolhas por medo de me arrepender depois, o que é um paradoxo cruel: me arrepender por medo de me arrepender. Mas a gente faz. Por isso, hoje, quando sinto que estou prestes a decidir algo grande, eu tento identificar se o que está me guiando é o medo ou o desejo. Se é fuga ou direção.

Outra coisa que tenho tentado prestar atenção são as vozes externas. Às vezes, sem perceber, a gente toma decisões querendo aprovação. Esperando aplauso. Ou mesmo querendo calar aquela voz crítica de alguém. Spoiler: essa motivação nunca segura a onda quando as coisas apertam.

Eu ainda sou meio caótica. Ainda me pego pulando de cabeça em situações sem mapa nem boia. Mas, quando consigo, eu tento olhar para o contexto como se fosse um tabuleiro. Visualizar as peças. Pensar: se eu for por aqui, o que pode acontecer? E se der tudo errado? Eu aguento? Eu cresço? Porque não dá pra garantir que tudo vai dar certo — e eu já não espero mais isso de mim. Mas dá pra tentar escolher caminhos que, mesmo se derem errado, ainda me levem para algum lugar bom.

Também tenho aprendido a conversar comigo. Parece óbvio, mas não é. Eu costumava tomar decisões sem me consultar de verdade. Ia pelo fluxo. Hoje, me pergunto o que eu quero de verdade. O que eu estou tentando evitar. É um exercício. Às vezes, a resposta vem. Às vezes, só vem o silêncio.

No fim das contas, eu ainda sou feita de instinto, mas agora com uma dose de consciência. Ainda erro, claro. Mas venho tentando transformar minhas decisões em pontes, não em buracos. E, se for pra errar, que seja por tentar ser fiel ao que eu sinto — e não ao que esperam de mim.
