Happy Australia Day

January 26th is Australia Day, a national holiday upon which the country takes a day to stop and celebrate - and due to the cultural diversity that exists Australian people celebrate in many different ways. It's one of my favourite public holidays although I'm grateful to have been born here on every day of the year and don't just stop to think about it today.
Below is a poem written in the early part of the 1900's that celebrates the author's love of this country; I thought it would be a fitting way to convey my own feelings about my country.

Have a good holiday day! I'd tell you enjoy some BBQ, those suits well for holidays, but it must be so hot that you would melt if you do
Thanks mate, Australia day this year has been somewhat melty.
It's currently 45°C, bloody hot, so I've decided against a BBQ as it's simply too hot. It's been a nice day though, my air conditioning is cool and I've been relaxing.
Melty. Good word for it.
With 45° not even if you go under the shadow and with a fan on your face would be bearable, collapse guaranteed... That's good it came on Monday, a long weekend!
It's going to be almost that hot all week, not going to be very pleasant, 43 degrees tomorrow where I work. 😭
Now a work travel in a more fresh area would definitely be convenient!
The Maldives. 😁
Haha, that's a place I would like to visit one day in my life even if one week for 8k€ sounds not nice for the pockets
Great poem!
Happy Australia Day! I didn't know it was today until suddenly all of my Australian colleagues were so quiet today on my slack app.
Have a good one!
I never expect people outside of Australia to know it's Australia Day, unless that person is Australian I guess. Been a good day here, hot though at 45°C.
Haha yeah, half of my work colleagues are Australian. I thought last week they were saying something about this holiday.
Ugh, 45° C sounds too hot. 🥵
Happy Australia Day Sir
I love the verses in this poem. I appreciate and praise all hard working Australians around the world.
Thanks mate, it's been a good day.
The poet express his love for his country in a very beautiful way. Excellent.
Happy Australia Day, have a very enjoyable holiday, my friend, @galenkp.

The fact that poem isn't about being mauled by some rabid animal after chugging an ice cold VB is a travesty. You guys gotta rewrite that shit.
I know right, there's not even a mention of getting savaged by a croc or a shark, not even a hint of all the deadly venomous snakey bastards we have here. Totally misleading!
Wrong century, but definitely should be in the cultural vernacular.
I have such a hard time of this day. I love our country but I struggle with many aspects of this day.
Still, I woke up thinking of I was to share anything on my Facebook wall it would be the second stanza of this exact poem. And, here it is.
It is a beautiful poem. And I am very grateful to call this wide brown land "home".
A good place to be indeed and a good day to celebrate and rejoice.
I did the very Australian thing of using my solar panels to pump the coldest possible air into my home. I am not looking forward to venturing outside tomorrow.
I know right? Me too.
It's not been a bad day, just a slightly different sort of day than I'd usually have. Work tomorrow though, that's going to suck.
At least I get to ask my colleague whether she made it down to Victor Harbour this weekend, or chickened out. She loves the heat. She's a masochist. Her name isn't Elizabeth, but I have started calling her Lizzy, because she's clearly cold blooded, like a Lizard.
I'm sure she'll go for a walk on her lunch break tomorrow.
What a beautiful poem that reflects love, but love for the whole, the variety, all that Australia means, although he treated the poisonous animals with affection, not mentioning them, nor the annoying sand, but I think he saw more of the positives and the wonders, like the spectacular scenery and the prosperity of the country.
Very happy Australia Day! Enjoy it very much!🤗
Thanks, it's all over nowfor another year but it was a good day.
I am very happy to read that! Good night to you!
Happy Australia Day! Sounds like it is a hot one there these days. Surely you are staying cool in the air conditioning with a good book and Cleo by your side.
Very hot yeah, but my AC works well and we had a good day nonetheless. Cleo too! (Although she always has a great day, loads of snoozing.)
Sounds like my pets. We have just the opposite here. About 12 plus inches of snow over the last couple days and it is around 12 degrees F. 2 degrees with the windchill. The only thing that is the same is the pets, they are curled up and snoozing away all the time.
I'd be happy for some snow at th moment. It wasn't a bad day really, I watched the NFL, both games, and am looking forward to the Bowl in a couple weeks.
I think the bowl will be good. Both teams were so overlooked at the beginning of the season. That Patriots and Broncos game, especially second half was wild with all the snow.
It was incredible how fast conditions deteriorated in about a quarter, must have been difficult to do their jobs, but then it was the same for both teams. I'm going with the Seahawks for the win, they execute well.
I agree, Seahawks look solid.
We'll know soon enough, I just hope it's a good game. No spoilers as I'll not be able to watch live (will be at work).
Happy Australia Day! I'm guessing that means it was a long weekend for you?
Yep, a national public holiday.
I made some Lamingtons for Australia Day. I'd never heard of them but, Taraz mentioned them in a comment, so I looked them up. Delicious!
Legit lamingtons!
There's nothing quite like lamingtons from a local fair made by some woman who lives on a fuck load of land in a farm house. There's a certain kind of care and "Australia" that goes into it. Hopefully you liked yours.
And did you post some to me? Hope so.
Regret they were too moist and melt-in-the-mouth to survive the trip. Sorry an' all.
Damn it. So good though. Put them in a bowl and top with vanilla ice cream. I might have done that a time or three.
They're all gone! Maybe next time!:)
And I know there'll be a next time.
I once lived in a country I was proud to call home...
Not so much these days. 🥺
I feel you man, it's similar here although I try to love it. Things are degenerating though and it's getting harder.
