There’s a saying that the only person you could ever truly know is yourself. I don’t know if I’m quoting it as it is but it’s somewhere along those lines. You might know so many details about who you call a friend, brother or sister but who they are to themselves, is something you may never know.

If I woke up one day, to find out that somebody I hold dear to my heart is a vampire, and his or her entire family, are vampires, I would be shocked. So shocked that I would be speechless. I would be so shocked that I would reminisce all the beautiful times we’d shared, and view them in light of the information I just discovered. I would also be wowed at the fact that I’ve been living with an actual vampire. This realization is something that would definitely make me smile before logic starts to set in.

Logic settling in, this is going to be a very hard truth for me. Vampires, as we are told, rely on blood for their survival. I’m human, they’re vampires. Is there the possibility that I’ve once appeared as a potential food source and they had to muster enough self-control that keep themselves away from me? Do they come from a generation of vampires, that have normalized living in the same space as humans or did they get infected recently? Why did they choose to reveal themselves to me now? I would have so many questions to ask, and knowing myself, I will most likely, end up taking this situation lightly because the term friend, is actually a big deal to me. I mean, if I’ve known you for over four years and you’ve not sucked my blood, that should count for something, shouldn’t it?

Friendship, isn’t taken lightly, where I’m concerned. The few friends I have, I know how much they mean to me, how long it took for us to call each other friends, and what it took. I wouldn’t just discard those beautiful memories we’ve shared because of this realization. It’s a risk yeah, but one I’m willing to take. I have very few friends, and I cherish each of them so much. As I write this, I even use one of them as a blueprint for my reaction. If said person and her family were vampires, what would I do? I’d simply buy us red wine, and we would drink while staring at the TV, glancing at each other occasionally to laugh at the incredulity of the situation. I just can’t be the one to bring my girl down.

This realization would even help our understanding of each other, although you might have to endure my unending list of stupid questions like why you didn’t display your strength, when we both struggled to lift something? I don’t know but I really really love my friends so even the knowledge that they’re blood suckers won’t cut it. Call me that naive person that runs headfirst into danger, or whatever but that’s how friendship is to me.
