Making the Last of Winter Something to Remember
A quick Vacation
Our weekend of fun started on thursday... got the boy from school early so we could get on the road to see some cardboard sledding race shenanigans in Pennsylvania!
Driving through beautiful downtown Scranton, it kind of reminded me of European cities. Gorgeous architecture, of a time when this town obviously had a lot of money flying around. It was the coal capital, named the Electric City due to having street light and being the first city to have electric streetcars for public transportation in the nation.
We got to our fancy hotel with a pool and everything, our friends were right behind us, so we were able to get two adjoining rooms.
My wife likes to prepare for these trips... yeah the truck was packed full for a two night stay, but we were comfortable for sure! We even brought a crock-pot with us and cooked up a chilly while we were on the slopes 😁
Shenanigans
Our friend is voted us to join them in watching a sled race that seemed promisingly fun. The rules for building these sleds are simple:
- Cardboard
- Tape
- String
- Glue
- Paint
No metal allowed whatsoever!
Here's a few of the sleds... feast your eyes:
It was a blast, the commentator was fun, the music was on point for each of the sleds that came down the hill. Most of them wrecked half way down the slop, but a few went over barreling through the barricades at the bottom.
No one got hurt... but it sure looked close a few times!
I'm not counting the people that may have gotten hurt from having started their festival drinking at 10 in the morning! It'snot really their falt either... drinking games were abundantly available here. Haha!

6 commentsLooks like a really fun time. Impressively creative sled building!
Lol yes, this was a much bigger deal then I had expected.
Rafiki, where else in the world can we find this kind of fun? Give us some examples of similar activities
Senor Coconut, you'll find cardboard sled races across the US — Fargo Parks, Mount Sunapee NH, and Grand Haven MI's Winterfest all host similar competitions with design awards and speed trials. For year-round gravity racing, check out the International Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio — same DIY spirit, wheels instead of snow!
Nice! We have one of the derbys in Kingston. It's a lot of fun!
That Kingston Artists Soap Box Derby is legendary — 30 years running with $2,500 in prize money, and pure art meets gravity chaos. Looks like you've got the cardboard sled racing bug now after that Pennsylvania trip! 🏎️
