[ESP-ING [ Girardot Square

! [ENGLISH]
It is common to see Bolívar Square next to the cathedral; however, the Maracay Cathedral is not next to this square but rather next to Girardot Square, which is named after the statue of Atanasio Girardot, a national hero who fought alongside Bolívar in many of his battles and died in the Battle of Bárbula in Carabobo. This plaza has undergone several renovations over the years, but I noticed that it is currently not being maintained by state agencies, despite being right in front of the church.
When I went to this plaza, I noticed that it has many green spaces, but they are scattered, and only some areas provide shade since there are both small and large plants. I noticed that the benches are arranged around the plaza under small canopies—some have them, and others do not.

In many areas, the plaza’s floor is made of dirt, which makes it look unsightly around the benches—there’s a sort of weathered, crumbling surface there—while the area around the Girardot statue and the eagle statue is paved with large, colonial-style concrete slabs; Where the Girardot statue stands, there used to be a fountain that I noticed today isn’t working and is very deteriorated

This plaza has restrooms for women and men; during the day, some of them are open, and you have to pay a small fee to use them. Sometimes it’s open, but at night it’s closed, and many people have taken over parts of the square to relieve themselves. I imagine many of these people work nearby at night, while others are homeless and living on the streets—like the person I saw sleeping there in the middle of the afternoon, out in the sun.
In one part of the plaza there is a pedestal with a bronze eagle, symbolizing the Americans who fell in Puerto Cabello and collaborated with General Francisco de Miranda. This area is quite dirty around the base, and since it’s somewhat hidden, that’s where the foul odor from people’s bodily functions is most noticeable. It’s unfortunate that it’s in this condition.
I have seen, when passing through this plaza, city workers cleaning the area around it—and I imagine the central part as well—but there are areas that are neglected. It is a rather iconic plaza, given its location next to the cathedral, and it should be better maintained.
We couldn't miss taking a photo of the church. This church retains its colonial style and has also undergone several restorations. Right now, it has been painted beautifully, just as they are painting the bullring. The wooden door at the church entrance is one of the most striking features, along with its colonial architectural style. At that moment, the bells were ringing to announce that the church service would begin soon. We went inside and took the opportunity to take photos of the interior the pews, the confessional, and the many statues found there.

This church is truly beautiful. I’m not really into churches, but I can tell that it’s very well maintained. They’ve left parts of it exposed so you can see how it was built; there are sections made of brick, and the wooden ceiling remains intact—of course, thanks to the repairs that were done. I also invite you to take a look at this square, which is absolutely beautiful.
