Another Done and So Was I - March 26, 2026@goldenoakfarm
On Thursday morning I was up around 6AM and didn’t have to tend stoves as it was to get into the 60’s during the day. I got 2 posts up and the kitchen cleaned up. Then I spent time on the phone making calls and tending to problems, again.
At 10AM I headed out to the South Herb garden.
It was this god-awful mess ahead of me. Usually in the fall, my helper friend cuts down all the tall stuff so it’s easier to clean out in the spring. But between his feet bothering him and the cold coming early, it never got done.
I’d made it nearly halfway down the garden when I came upon an invasive. I’d seen it last year, but didn’t realize it was invasive. I thought it was something I’d planted the year before so I left it. Big mistake!
Turns out it spreads by runners AND has deep tap roots. So I was digging down the depth of the shovel after the tap roots. You can see the little green tops popping up.
I finished that digging by noon and even though I wasn’t halfway, I quit to have lunch and rest. I came back out at 1PM and got started again.
My #4 helper arrived at 1:30PM and she went on errands and then set about getting the bathroom cleaned up rather thoroughly.
I worked until 3:15PM and got it finished. Not much had survived the weeds last year so I will be planting new herbs into it, I hope.
The cement block under the downspout had completely disintegrated, so I got a new one out to replace it. I’ve tried and tried to find this style out here again and so far no luck. These have to be 30 years old and extras from when I first put them down.
New South with BulbTone
Before I cleaned up, I got my photos, made my notes, and then put down BulbTone on both gardens. I’d forgotten to do the New South garden on Wednesday.
I was so wiped out. I just sat in my chair until supper. At 7:30PM I got up and got the shades pulled and the fires started as it was to get cold during the night right through until Sunday or Monday.
On Friday I hope to work on the amendments orders until my #3 helper comes. Then we will be putting up the lights in the office for Sunday’s seed starting. I also have to tend the seedlings.

5 commentsI hope you got all that invasive weed out. I planted peppermint one year, and still find it popping up from time to time. The gardens look nice and tidy, but that is a lot of work.
I hope I did too! I’ve got peppermint in the New Herb garden and I know I’ll be pulling a lot of it out of the walkway.
Why the cement block down the downspout?
Too keep the garden soil from washing away.
You did a lot to your garden. What a busy morning. Your garden are better now. 🌿
