Chasing Waterfalls: Discovering the Beauty of Lulugayan Falls in Calbiga, Samar
Hi, hivers! Let me share one of the most amazing places in my Hometown.
When people talk about hidden gems in the Philippines, Samar is often overlooked. But tucked away in the quiet municipality of Calbiga lies of the most breathtaking and beautiful natural wonders in the Visayas — Lulugayan Falls. Known as the "Mini Niagara of Samar", this wide and powerful waterfall is proof that the paradise doesn't always come with crowds.
I'm grateful and proud to represent one of the tourist spots in Samar, and I'm proud to be Waray-Waray!
Getting to Lulugayan Falls is already part of the adventure. From the town proper of Calbiga, you travel several kilometers toward Barangay Literon, passing scenic farmland, rolling hills, and peaceful rural communities. The road eventually leads to a registration area where visitors prepare for a short trek to the falls. I am originally from Samar by the way. hihi
The hike itself as around 700 meters and relatively easy, making it accessible even for beginners. As you walk along the trail, the distant sound of rushing water builds anticipation — a natural teaser of what awaits ahead.
The first sight of Lulugayan Falls is nothing short of mesmerizing. Unlike tall, narrow waterfalls, this one stretches across a wide rock formation, creating a curtain-like cascade of water that looks dramatic and powerful. At around 50 meters wide, it is considered one of the widest waterfalls in the Philippines.
The water flows from Lake Kalidongan and travels through a series of rapids and smaller cascades before reaching the main falls, creating layers of natural beauty that make the entire area feel magical.
The constant roar of the water, the cool mist in the air, and the lush green surroundings create an atmosphere that feels both peaceful and powerful at the same time.
Locals and travelers alike often compare Lulugayan Falls to Niagara Falls because of its width and the way the water spreads evenly across the rock ledge. While it may not be as massive as the world-famous Niagara, the resemblance is strong enough to earn it the nickname — and the experience feels just as grand, especially when standing right in front of it.
Travel Tips for Visiting Lulugayan Falls
- Visit during dry season for safer trekking and clearer views of the cascades
- Wear comfortable footwear because you'll need to walk to reach the falls
- Bring extra clothes if you plan to swim
- Respect local guidelines since visitor numbers are limited to protect the environment
What You Can do There
Lulugayan Falls isn't just for sightseeing — it's a place where you can truly connect with nature.
- Swimming in designated safe areas with cool. refreshing water
- Taking photos with the majestic waterfall as your backdrop
- Relaxing in cottages or picnic areas while enjoying the sound of nature
- Exploring nearby rapids and smaller cascades
There are also viewing spots and eco-friendly facilities built to help visitors appreciate the falls without damaging the environment.
One of the best things about visiting Lulugayan Falls is knowing that tourism here directly supports the local community. Residents of Barangay Literon are actively involved in guiding visitors, maintaining the area, and managing eco-tourism activities. This ensures that the beauty of the falls is preserved while providing livelihood opportunities for locals.

STOPIt doesn't have to be a famous waterfall to enjoy the natural beauty that's just waiting to be shared with others—I really liked it.
