La historia sigue a una niña de 10 años llamada Lizzie que sufre bullying en la escuela por parte de sus compañeros de clases, pero esto no es todo. También sufre violencia en el lugar que debería ser seguro para ella, su propia casa, por parte de una madre negligente y un padre que no se involucra en nada. Hasta que un día conoce a Nessa, una joven que le dice que es una bruja y necesita su ayuda en una misión. Es allí donde la magia irrumpe en su vida y todo empieza a cobrar color.

The story follows a 10-year-old girl named Lizzie who is bullied at school by her classmates, but that’s not all. She also faces abuse in the place that should be safest for her—her own home—at the hands of a neglectful mother and a father who takes no interest in her life. Until one day she meets Nessa, a young woman who tells her she’s a witch and needs her help on a mission. That’s when magic bursts into her life, and everything begins to take on color.

Es una de esas historias que te estrujan el corazón. Se supone que está pensada para un público joven, pero tiene partes muy duras de digerir, hay escenas de violencia y maltrato infantil bastantes dolorosas de leer. De verdad uno la pasa mal leyendo esos primeros capítulos. Después todo mejora un poco cuando Nessa decide ayudarla y usa la excusa de la magia y el ser una bruja para mantenerla distraída y que crea en ella.

It’s one of those stories that really tugs at your heartstrings. It’s supposed to be aimed at a young audience, but there are parts that are really hard to stomach—there are scenes of violence and child abuse that are quite painful to read. It’s genuinely tough going through those first few chapters. Things do get a little better later on when Nessa decides to help her and uses the excuse of magic and being a witch to keep her distracted and make her believe in her.

Ella no es una bruja ni posee magia alguna, pero sí hizo que los días de Lizzie fueran mucho más felices de lo que fueron alguna vez. Ella lo hizo a conciencia porque tuvo un pasado similar, con una madre que no cuido de ella y vive con la culpa de no haber podido ayudar a su hermano de un destino trágico. El mismo destino que le deparaba a Lizzie si nadie la ayudaba. Así que tomó cartas en el asunto y básicamente la secuestró.

She isn't a witch and doesn't possess any magic, but she did make Lizzie's days much happier than they had ever been. She did it wholeheartedly because she had a similar past—a mother who didn't take care of her—and she lives with the guilt of not having been able to save her brother from a tragic fate. The same fate that awaited Lizzie if no one helped her. So she took matters into her own hands and basically kidnapped her.

En su afán por proteger a la pequeña y hacerla feliz puso en peligro a su familia encontrada, que son su mejor amigo y dos hermanos mellizos adolescentes. Juntos formaron una familia bastante peculiar, pero llena de amor. Aunque a veces este tipo de historias no tiene un final feliz. Ojalá hubiera tenido otro tipo de cierre, sin embargo, entiendo el motivo por el que termino como lo hizo.

In his eagerness to protect the little girl and make her happy, he put his new family—his best friend and two teenage twin brothers—in danger. Together, they formed a rather unusual family, but one filled with love. Although stories like this don’t always have a happy ending. I wish it had ended differently, but I understand why it ended the way it did.

Quisiera no darles spoilers, pero tiene el final que se merecía esta historia que intenta concientizar y ser una alarma ante este tipo de injusticias que siguen pasando en la sociedad. Hay muchas lizzies por la vida, lamentablemente. Por eso es una historia de drama social y hace una excelente crítica hacia la sociedad que no se involucra. Es un libro bastante cruel, pero mágico. A mí me hizo llorar al final, pero como bien dice en la portada del libro. Es una historia demasiado hermosa para no ser contada. Tiene su cuota de resiliencia y aunque sea agridulce, vale la pena leerla.

I’d rather not give away any spoilers, but it has the ending this story deserved—one that aims to raise awareness and serve as a wake-up call about the injustices that continue to occur in society. There are many Lizzies out there, unfortunately. That’s why it’s a story of social drama and offers an excellent critique of a society that doesn’t get involved. It’s a pretty cruel book, but magical. It made me cry at the end, but as the book’s cover rightly says, it’s a story too beautiful not to be told. It has its share of resilience, and even though it’s bittersweet, it’s worth reading.
